Newark - any opinions?

Does anyone know about Newark, we are a mixed race family, my dh white British and me half white British half Asian (relevant because I have had to problems all over the U.K. in places I 'don't fit in' due to not being white despite being born here and culturally raised British).

We are looking around the different areas but I haven't been yet. Dh has a business nearby tuxford so that's on the list. We may buy a home as a base between the U.K. and another country for business so might not live permanently there but I don't want to buy somewhere I won't be able to safely go to alone!

Here are some statistics

Like a lot of the Midlands it's a small town with some quite deprived areas in a sea of well off countryside.

I have family there and as far as i know they have not been crime victims apart from a few stolen numberplates etc. There's a Waitrose and a few nice coffee shops etc. I don't think the secondary schools are great.

I wouldn't think of it as unsafe but it might be difficult to socialise as incomers regardless of race, as more people will have lived there all their lives and have family locally. Depends of course how you approach it and who you already know.

Newark is a safe place to live in comparison to a lot of places in the UK. I'd happily walk home late at night alone without feeling concerned. Not a lot of diversity apart from large traveller population but I've not known friends to have suffered from any racism whilst living there.

Lots of nice places to eat and a lovely market. Villages on the outskirts are all pleasant. Secondary schools aren't the best but children from there can attend Kings Grammar school / Kesteven and Grantham girls grammar in Grantham which are highly rated and bus transport is available

Just to add, when I lived there, I didn't have any trouble integrating despite not knowing anyone when I moved. I found it to be friendly

Thanks
We live in a rural village in the SE which I love and have had no real problems here. Friendly sounds good!

No you’re not going to have problems with racism if that’s what you’re thinking but there’s racism and prejudice everywhere. It’s hard to avoid. We are mixed race family in nearby Grantham and no issues at all.

@pinkypurplesofa do you have kids? Tuxford has a great secondary school but lots of kids go to the grammar schools in Sleaford and Grantham, there are lovely rural villages, mine is quite diverse, lots of people commute to London from Newark, it's only 1hr 15 into kings cross. PM me if you want to know which villages are nice.
