Toilet flush help please

Hi, my toilet flush kept dripping from the inlet pipe, where the ball cock arm presses to say it's full enough (sorry if my "technical terms" aren't correct and don't make sense). I took it apart to try to fix, with the aid of my trusty Reader's Digest DIY book and replaced the diaphragm in the inlet bit but the leak was still there.

The arm doesn't seem to stop the water completely as if it presses too much against the pressure point, the arm slowly slides backwards, the bolts (nuts?) don't seem to keep it in position.

Before I try to get a plumber out which I really can't afford at the moment, would anyone here be able to give any advice? Or if not, does anyone know roughly how much I'd be paying to get it fixed/replaced? Is this a cheapish thing for a plumber, or a "sucks air between teeth and tuts" kind of thing?

Thanks

Ask @PigletJohn he knows pretty much everything!

I was going to tag him (her?) but didn't want to be cheeky. I was hoping they'd find the thread by the power of positive thinking 😁

If you were able to take the old one out for repair, you are probably capable of fitting a new replacement. The ones with a brass spigot are much less likely to leak due to cross-threading. Fluidmaster are good

the washer worn out, dry and rigid, not giving full seal.
Replace the washer.
Had similar issue once, covered the washer with cling film, lasted for more years 😀

I appreciate your faith in me 😁. I did look at new ones but got very confused cause they didn't look the same so I didn't know if they'd fit. I will have a look and hopefully fix it

That's the bit I replaced, the washer/diaphragm - black rubber thing. I am not cut out for this DIY stuff

Yes, they will fit. There are two types, side-entry, where the supply pipe comes in the side of the cistern, near the top, and bottom entry. The side entry is easier to fit because you don't have to drain and reseal the cistern

The newer design is quieter

You can still get the old ball valves if you prefer, it will be a plastic one you need

Thanks. Mine is side entry so 🤞when I get paid, I'll get a shiny new one and all will be well.
