Hardy yet cozy carpet ? Wool??

We are changing our carpets, the current one is knackered after only 5 years. So we need something that's hardy but won't go horrible and flat. It also needs to cope with busy areas like the living room and front door landing.

We've been thinking wool, natural, non allergic, cozy, warm, etc but I keep wondering how much work is going to be keep it looking nice. Plus we have a toddler and it's a flat so it need to be thick enough to have some sounding proofing. We are putting proper sounding underlay too, this would be an extra thing.

Am I crazy to put in wool? Are there any better options that look good and meet our requirements?

We have wool and have been through the toddler stage. They aren't a nightmare to keep clean. Apart from that one time I had glitter playdoh.

Wool is not very nice underfoot, you’re also likely to get carpet moths.

the best way to keep carpets looking their best is to have a no shoe policy indoors, and don’t let children walk around with food in their hands.

We've mostly got 80% wool carpets, and have had them over 20 years. They are comfy and nice, and feel nicer under bare feet than our acrylic carpet. However, in the last couple of years the wool ones have had carpet moths, which is really annoying.

Our lovely wool carpets were wrecked by moths in less than six months… Never again.

Another vote against wool. Carpet moths have reached epidemic proportions- possibly related to climate change - and their larvae can eat massive patches out of a wool carpet. Even toxic powerful insecticides don’t seem to deter the little shits from their endless munching.
I replaced all my (moth eaten) wool carpeting with synthetic a few years ago, and it still looks lovely.

Look at Carpetright Marrakesh Berber carpet range. It’s synthetic and very hard wearing and very affordable. Think it’s exactly what you need! Just don’t skimp on underlay and I think you’ll be impressed.

pimlicoanna · 12/09/2022 23:09

All these moths! We've not had this problem thank god

minipie · 12/09/2022 23:28

Interesting. We had clothes moth for ages and they never touched the wool carpets except one tiny patch in a little used place.

I wanted to like synthetic but kept coming back to wool. (Most synthetics look a bit too shiny IMO). We have either 100% wool or 80/20 everywhere. No regrets and it feels lovely underfoot.

We are looking at changing carpets after 7 years! I genuinely don’t know where to start ! So is wool the best starting point?

suninthefog · 13/09/2022 01:39

Never thought about moths! I wonder if a 80/20 mix would be good then?

We have wool in our hall, landing and stairs and also have a toddler.
Thankfully no months although we have months in the house so I'm wondering if that's just a matter of time...
Anyway, even though it looks lovely I hate it. It's so scratchy to sit on.
I'm about to get carpet in my bedroom and I'll not be going for wool

Babdoc · 13/09/2022 09:16

OP, getting a mixed fibre wool/synthetic in any proportion doesn’t help, as the moth larvae will just selectively munch the wool fibres, leaving visible damage just the same.
Modern totally synthetic carpets are a massive improvement on the original, nasty, shiny, electric shock generating, nylon horrors of times past! Mine look exactly like the wool they replaced- minus the moth holes - and are still in perfect condition, warm and soft.

NotMyselfWithoutCoffee · 13/09/2022 10:16

We had carpet moths 3 years after getting wool carpet and they totally wrecked it.
My house felt so unclean, never again.

80/20 with a short to medium pile and pay more for a denser carpet. Get the cosiness from top of the range underlay rather than longer pile.

If you are currently mothfree, I would risk the 80/20 personally. Speckly carpet shows dirt less. We moved into a house with good quality speckly 80/20, got them cleaned every year, and moved out 10 years later with them still in good nick. They just didn't seem to show any wear at all.

Sadly we have moths in our new house, and moths eat 80/20, so we have to stick to polyprop.
