Would you prefer to have a family bathroom and a downstairs WC or have a family bathroom with a downstairs shower room&WC?

Definitely with a shower. Great if you have any temporary or long term mobility issues

We have a shower and wc downstairs, main bathroom upstairs. It is the only reason for choosing this house over any other. There’s only two of us, but it’s fantastic!

If you have the space, upstairs family bathroom and downstairs wc & shower room.

TheBeesKnee · 07/09/2022 17:17

If there is space for a decent shower then yes, of course.

I'd be less keen if it was a cramped cupboard.

Friend, had a toilet and shower, in one room, which was handy at times, and an extra bathroom upstairs although the new owners have renovated the house and 😲😲, looks like they have tried to make it posher but it does not seem to fit with the character of the building if that makes sense, some bits I admit look better and not sure what their perspectives were, but in the current bathroom that had a toilet and shower, the shower has been changed for a washing machine,

Having a whole shower room downstairs as well as an upstairs bathroom would be great, and especially useful if you have a big family /lots of guests.

But are you having to give up something else to make the space, like a utility room?

That's what I would of presumed they had done, was take out the downstairs toilet and shower, and have it just e.g. Washing and dryer, not half and half

Upstairs bathroom and downstairs shower room works best for us. Kids and husband (play footie/have manual jobs) can strip off and get straight in shower without trekking dirt or leaving dirty clothes upstairs. I can grab a shower early morning without disturbing anyone.

I can't see a reason why a downstairs shower would be useful to us at this stage, so it wouldn't be attractive to us as a family. That said, it wouldn't put us off, so long as another room hadn't been compromised to get the shower in.

So we are knocking through the upstairs w/c bathroom to make a family bathroom upstairs.
Downstairs I'm converting the porch to a utility room and was debating between adding just a W/C or a shower room & W/C. I've added a photo for visualisation.

I currently have a downstairs shower room/ toilet in my rented house and I do like the idea of having one downstairs as it's convenient when having guest and kids around.

When we had our extension built we included a utility room with WC off from it, this was perfect when it was just the two of us. Last year we decided to extend the WC into the utility room to make it into a bathroom (was going to be a shower room but with two children under 4 and another on the way we thought a bath would be more convenient for our needs). It didn't take that much space out of the utility room, we still have room for boiler, washing machine, tumble dryer, fridge freezer, broom cupboard as well as shoes. The bathroom has been perfect for us and has meant we now have two bathrooms without compromising space upstairs by splitting our original bathroom into family bathroom and ensuite which was the original plan.
