Spot lights in kitchen

Hello wise people. We are doing our kitchen from scratch, and I need some help with the lighting.
I would like spotlights that can be positioned, rather than those downlights that are flush with the ceiling. Is there a formula or a plan of where to put them, and how many I need? I don't want to end up with dark areas.
I'm considering under cabinet lighting too... but we don't have a huge budget.

We have a bar of 4 lights but, because of the nature of most kitchens, you tend to be facing either the window (which is fine) or one of the walls most of the time you are working, so any light behind you (ie, any light in the centre of the room) tends to throw shadows on what you are doing.
So under cabinet lighting is really important IMO. Makes all the difference.

Totally agree re the under cabinet lighting. The best is simple strip LED lighting.

The lights you can position are a little pointless and look very dated. Well thought out sunken LEDs are far better

Yeah, I think under cabinet lights might be the way forward.
Conversely, I think the sunken LEDs look dated, I had them in my kitchen 15 years ago. I hated changing the bulbs.

We have our spotlights over the worktops so that they arent behind us casting a shadow, downlights over the island and we have an LED strip under the wall units, which was not that expensive, about £150 for 3m, it looks like a strip of paper almost!

You can get recessed lights which can be positioned - see e.g. www.lightingstyles.co.uk/adjustable-recessed-downlights-single-double-or-triple (random website for illustration - I haven't bought from there). We used something like this in our kitchen.

@CasperGutman ooh! I don't mind those. Have you been happy with them?

My house only has recessed led spot lights (low ceilings) and all of them can be moved to point in different directions in the fitting.

Very! Though I should emphasise we didn't buy them from this supplier, and that they may not have been this exact product (but they certainly look very similar).

In kitchens all useful lights must be above worktops, lights in the middle of the room are mostly for decoration!
The bar lights are the worst. Led strip works well under top cupboards if you have them.
