Wall added that runs against window

I viewed a property at the weekend and it has an extension with a WC and utility. When I viewed outside the building I quickly realised they have cleared just shoved up a wall after building the extension and placed it against the existing window! Is this resolvable? I'm interested in the house but this has really put me off as it's clearly not a proper solution and is something I'll have to resolve.

The extension also didn't have planning permission which I believe in Scotland is fine for the size and single story as it's at the back of the house but I'm not sure if the toilet introduced later means it should have?

Any advise would be greatly appreciated!

You could take the internal wall down?

@MaybeMaybeNotJ yeah it seems like that's needed but the problem is part of the reason I was interested in this house was the extra toilet facility. It's been a shock to find a wall has just been popped up like that!

I think it's possible to replace the window with one with a post in the middle adjacent to where the wall butts against it. So one side would have a larger piece of glass than the other.
(We have the same situation with a hall / showerroom window.)

With a bodge line that is be looking really hard at other areas to ensure I wouldn't be buying a lemon.

The window can be fairly easily replaced with 2 smaller windows and a bit of wall up to the lintle.

I'd also be worried what else might be wrong with it...

Thanks all and thanks for the window suggestions @yomellamoHelly @Rollercoaster1920. I'm just puzzled as to why they didn't do that in the first place!

I do have the fear of what else is a bodge job but the rest of the house was built by a reputable builder so it's really just this extension that's an issue. It's so annoying as I honestly wanted this extra toilet but it would seem wrong to keep with such a poor structure - the utility room that's on the other side of the WC is open plan to the rest of the main house directly attached to the kitchen so that wall is all that separates the WC and the kitchen. Houses in this street don't come up very often - it seems to be an old person who was living there hence why they probably threw a WC in late on.

The house otherwise does need new electrics in and a new boiler but no other issues in the home report. What do I do? 😅

I don't suppose anyone knows if you need a building warrant or planning permission when adding a WC to an extension? They didn't get planning permission for this extension which from what I can read is fine for a single-storey of this size but I'm struggling to understand from online documentation on whether including sanitary items requires local authority approval.

Do you need building regs sign off in Scotland? That would help with knowing if it's a safe build and complies to regulation (insulation/material quality etc.). That's separate to planning permission and applies to permitted development extensions.

It really depends, if the window is in the front or back to have planning issues?

If at the back then it’s fairly easy for a bricklayer to sort out in a day or 2.

Brick up and add a smaller window or 2 smaller windows.
