Will this date?

I really love the stone kitchen worktops with heavy veins in, especially when used as a splashback and shelf too. Most seem to be Calcutta viola marble etc but I’d probably go granite or quartz alternative.

Everyone who I have showed pictures to hates it, so it seems to be marmite.

Quite happy to go with what I want even if it’s marmite, but I’m worried it will date quickly and il regret it. Kitchens are a huge expense!

With kitchens is it better to play it safe ?

We need a picture!

ApolloandDaphne · 03/09/2022 14:50

Depends if this is a long term home or not. If it is then go for what you like.

KylieWasHere · 03/09/2022 15:05

Everything dates. Have you ever seen a 90s kitchen that looks modern and fresh?? Just choose what you love…

floppybit · 03/09/2022 15:17

The plain white, beige or grey solid surface worktops have been in fashion for decades now. The ones with the heavy veining is starting to make a real comeback

floppybit · 03/09/2022 15:17

So you are ahead of the trend on this one!

And it’s a long term home

If it's your long term home and you like it why worry?

Dougieowner · 03/09/2022 16:26

Personally I hate it but then again I am not going to be living there.
If YOU like it then that is ALL that matters. 😁

I hate trends and go for whatever I like, not what is in vogue at the time.
I am sure that plenty of people will hate the stone fireplace we are having installed next week and will say we should have a 75-inch TV on the wall instead (a pet hate of mine).
Each to their own.

purfectpuss · 03/09/2022 19:31

I like it OP! I think because it's a natural material it remains a classic look. Keep the rest of the kitchen plain, so no busy patterns or florals on the walls or crockery etc. and it will look lovely! Go for stainless steel appliances, plain crockery, and plain tiles on floor.

minipie · 03/09/2022 19:39

I love this look and we were tempted but

a) Real marble with heavy veining like this is jolly expensive!

b) It was a bit too busy for me in real life - I like a calm kitchen

Instead we have real marble with somewhat more subtle veining, which I love. It’s like a faded version of your middle picture.

limitededitionbarbie · 03/09/2022 19:43

I love it. I was going to have this but changed my mind at the last minute as it would t have went well with my flooring. I love it op.

BlueMongoose · 03/09/2022 19:49

I'm looking for worktops too. I find that one a bit 'busy' myself, but you're right, it's a marmite thing, each to their own.
My problem is I want a very light colour, the cream side of white, without a lot of veining. I love the original Onyx that formica used to do, but that's long out of production. 🙁After much searching I did find one I liked, but it was a US product and though they export here, of course they don't export that one.🙄

Bouledeneige · 03/09/2022 19:49

I think it's been fashionable for quite a long time. It will probably date but all kitchen styles do. I think you should go with what you love.

But don't go overboard - some people go to town with the same veined marble in bathrooms etc. that's too much.

Inkyblue123 · 03/09/2022 19:52

I love this! Have you seen Jens kitchen in “Dead to me”?

I agree with this.

Personally, I think it looks extremely dated and I don't like it at all. But then again I don't like grey or navy kitchens so I'm hardly know for my trendy tastes 😂

I think if you love it, then it really doesn't matter what anyone else thinks. If you plan on selling in the next couple of years you'll need to consider what a buyer would want. But if this is a long term home then sod everyone else and get whatever makes your heart happy.

CaptainBeakyandhisband · 03/09/2022 20:12

The problem with this look is that real marble is not a very good material for a kitchen (it dissolves in vinegar/acid). So most of these worktops are made of quartz which is a man made product (quartz worktops are made of aggregate bound with resin). We very nearly went for a veined quartz, I saw a couple I liked in showrooms but when I saw large areas or actual slabs they looked obviously fake to me. I can’t quite explain it but they looked too deliberate and ordered.

minipie · 03/09/2022 21:03

Agree you will not get this look with a “mock marble” quartz

And yes marble does etch if you get acid on it - although with honed rather than polished marble it’s barely noticeable tbh

It’s gorgeous tactile stuff though. We swapped last minute from quartz to marble and don’t regret it

Rosemarypots · 03/09/2022 21:14

Most kitchens date to varying degrees. I chose a neutral shaker kitchen with a plain grey quartz worktop, hoping it wouldn't date. But it has done, as the worktop has that slightly "bubbly" pattern, which nobody really buys now. Also I wouldn't choose the cabinet handles again, or a pull out larder. But trends in kitchens move quite slowly, and in the end it doesn't really matter.

If you want to play it safer, you could go for a worktop with more subtle veining. But if you really love the bigger veins then go for them.
