What type of home would you NEVER want to live in? Why?
For context. I love so many styles of houses I don’t know how to narrow my search.

If I had ££££ I'd never live in those pseudo Georgian Manor houses, or modern ones that look like offices in Reading.

I like most styles except low-ceilinged new builds where the rooms are too small and there's no storage.

Rutland2022 · 03/09/2022 21:04

I’ve lived in a lot of different styles of house, but cannot abide traffic or traffic noise, flats or bungalows.

I live in a thatched cottage in an ultra quiet village now but last house was an individual new build (non estate). They couldn’t be more different but we loved them both. You will have to carry me out of this one though. I love it.

Suetwo · 03/09/2022 21:05

The houses are one of the worst things about living in this island (along with the grey skies and the overcrowding).

Anywhere noisy. Also, anywhere near a 'problem family'...aka vicious, ignorant, noisy chavs with feral kids who think it's funny to upset their neighbours and ruin people's lives.

I hate new builds. Frankly, I don't know how builders and developers get away with some of the ghastly rabbit hutches they throw up. There is nothing more depressing than a giant new build, where ten houses have been jammed onto bits of scrap land fit for only two or three. You can barely breathe. I mean, what is going on when you build an estate with roads so narrow you can barely get ONE car down it, let alone two!

MintJulia · 03/09/2022 21:18

A house facing onto a fast, busy road
A modern semi/terrace with paper thin walls
Any dwelling with no outside space that gets some sun.

miserablecat · 03/09/2022 21:24

I wouldn't like to live in a pretty house that had windows onto the street because you'd get nosey people like me pretending they weren't looking in as they walked past!

miserablecat · 03/09/2022 21:25

...and probably not next to a pub or nightclub

SnoopyNoseTits · 03/09/2022 21:25

Thatched roof

saltrock123 · 03/09/2022 21:38

Here goes
High rise block of flats
Anywhere with neighbours close by
Beside a main road
Rooms with eaves
Open plan
Terraced or semi
Flat over shop, I grew up in one.
No garden
No privacy
Anywhere noisy like near an industrial estate
No view, I don't want to look out the window straight into someone else's house
No garage
Only one reception room

Verbena87 · 03/09/2022 21:47

Oh and open plan. Love being able to close the kitchen door on the dishes and enjoy my dinner. Don’t want to feel like everything has to be under control at once 🤣

QuietYou · 03/09/2022 21:55

DH is desperate for a house with lots of land we've looked at loads which are all amazing in the day but the idea of looking out the windows at night and seeing just dark space, scares me to death.

Mumcrew · 03/09/2022 21:56

Period houses with contemporary architecture additions. If you want a modern house, live in a new building, don’t ruin a lovely old house with plate glass and concrete boxing.

Gardens without grass or flowers, just pale coloured paving and stupid pots with box balls.

Low ceilinged houses with rabbit warren rooms, especially if they’re listed so there’s no changing anything. Don’t want my home to feel like a pub.

bloodyunicorns · 03/09/2022 22:00

A new build on a housing estate out of town with no amenities.

A mock-Tudor house with those awful fake leaded windows.

A town house. All those stairs!

A thatched cottage. Pretty, yes, but tiny. And the thatch is full of spiders.

GlassofWaterAgai · 03/09/2022 22:03

I always said I didn't want a new build but after a year of searching, finally decided (reluctantly!!) to view one. I knew it was 'home', the second I walked in the door.

I think there's house styles I think I wouldn't like but ultimately it's about getting that 'home feeling'.

I used to live in a cottage in the middle of a wood with 3 miles to nearest neighbour, access was up a dirt track and we didn’t get post delivered or bins collected. The darkness was amazing! I loved walking around the wood at night with the owls and moonlight. You’d love it I’m sure once you adjust. I miss that house, well not the house as it was damp and mouldy and falling down, but the location at least.

But I don’t like people or lights 😂

Swimmingpoolsally · 03/09/2022 22:07

I’m the same as everyone else. I’d never want to jinx it as no one knows what life can throw ar you, but new build estates, High rise apartments, houses with no parking, over looked, next to a busy road I’d try to avoid.

I have one of these, although we are surrounded by trees. I find being surrounded by people much scarier.

Always4Brenner · 03/09/2022 22:15

My wishlist
bungalow no garden to maintain.
no open plan
no front door in living room I’d feel cold all the time.

OberthursGrizzledSkipper · 03/09/2022 22:25

What puts us off any house is a road full of vans. However nice the house is I am never living near loads of vans again.

Fififelix · 03/09/2022 22:29

No parking terraced , period homes money pits and not energy efficient. Very expensive in the current climate.

Hoolihan · 03/09/2022 22:37

Wouldn't mind a new build house (although wouldn't be my first choice) but would never live on one of those big estates with no shops or amenities. My in-laws live on one, the houses are all large and fairly attractive but the estate itself is just so depressing and claustrophobic.

Also wouldn't choose a town house, just don't like that tall narrow layout.

Violinist64 · 03/09/2022 22:45

I don’t like terraced houses or high rise flats. Thatched cottages are a fire hazard and have all sorts of creepy crawlies in the roof, including rodents. We are not DIY people and do not have endless supplies of money so pre-1920s houses are out too. In addition, houses built since the year 2000 tend to be boxes that look large on the outside but have very small rooms and hardly any storage inside. Shared drives are another no-no. I don’t like vast open plan areas, either.

I love bay windows and and easy to maintain houses, preferably detached. Our first home was a thirties semi and really solidly built. At present, we are in an eighties detached house, which suits us very well. Both have bay windows and both have been lovely homes.

birthdaytou · 03/09/2022 22:59

Those identical new build homes with thin walls on vast soulless estates that aren’t anywhere near any amenities. I like flats but wouldn’t want to live any higher than maybe 3rd or 4th floor.

My DH is the same ....I feel the same as you! I'm pretty sure for us it's a pipe dream anyway, we have only looked at one IRL.
(And I wouldn't like to be reliant on a car, where we live now is walkable to shops, DC school and the station)

MidnightMeltdown · 03/09/2022 23:25

@Rutland2022 😮 that sounds like something out of a horror film to me! 😱 😂
