Can vertical radiator be installed suspending on wall (1m above ground)?

DS's room is in the loft (2nd floor). The door for the stairs leading to his room is on the 1st floor. So stairs form part of his room layout.

The current radiator is rather rubbish. We want to replace it by moving the new one to above one of the bend of the stairs which has a height of about 3 meters to ceiling. To avoid the heat getting trapped lower down, we need to raise up the new radiator's position to about the same level of the bedroom floor. That would make the radiator sort of installed mid-wall without any footing on the ground.

I hope I explained sufficient clear (but not sure). The question is most of the radiators are installed with footings set on the floor (supporting the weight a bit??). Is it ok to install it so high up from the ground?

Thanks.

I have one on my bedroom wall above the skirting with the pipe work in the wall. Most heated towel rails are fitted this way. The weight is supported by the attachment to the wall not the pipes coming from the bottom.

Yes it's fine as long as the pipe work can get there alright. Normal rads are just screwed to the wall.

Yes, most column radiators are hung on wall mounted brackets, so you'll be fine.

How will he get to it to hide his dirty socks and undies behind 😂

Yes its fine but you’ll need to either have exposed pipework or do some drilling and replastering.

All our radiators are hung on the wall with no footing. The pipes run along the skirting board. But have you actually had someone in to cost it? If you want to hide the piping for most of the run you’ll need to replaster

Ohlife2020 · 30/08/2022 19:13

Yes, I've been wondering too if a plumber can also replaster. I think we can't avoid that even just by moving half a meter.

You can also get aluminium vertical rads which are lighter than steel ones. We got one as the plumber didn’t think our walls could support the weight of a steel one.

@Crazymadchickenlady , Thank you for the tips. May I ask you if you remember the difference in weight?

@Ohlife2020 not sure of the difference but if you google the ones you like you can usually find the weights in the technical specifications. It was a quite a few kilos difference I think. We got one from Apollo.
