Thinking of having one installed . I’m expecting that wood has gone through the roof, wondering how much it would cost to have it running through the winter months if any one has a general idea?

Kiln drying wood is the most ridiculous thing…… using energy to dry wood that your then going to burn….. 🙄 just buy it green, leave it outside and let it dry on its own.

there is plenty of free wood around if your willing to do a bit of leg work.
I know a guy who works in a stove shop and runs his on the pallets the stoves come on 🙂

You need to plan ahead to have dry wood for the winter. Many folks are using them seriously for the first time this year so will have to pay for kiln dried wood. We're collecting, chopping next year's wood now

We find the cost of wood really adds up, but I prefer it because we're paying in advance rather than using electricity and waiting to see what the bill is. Although we have no other heating and our house is old and freezing! It often drops to 5 degrees without the fire on. So we really have to keep it roaring to get the place to a decent temp.

LATBOTG DH built a rare and beautiful log store out of pallets a shed roofing stuff Grin. It's about 4m long, 3 log lengths deep and about 1.5m high. Very satisfying to look at when it's full.

Most of our wood is stored in that, we have a week's worth in the garage and a couple of night's worth in the log basket in the sitting room.

WhizzFizz · 29/08/2022 09:25

@Rapidtango I love a good log store! If I go round village open gardens I'm always impressed by log piles😂.
@LATBOTG Ours are stored outside for a year and then in the garage once seasoned. If you stack tidily against a wall they take up less space than you think.
@Diyextension That had occurred to me. Using fuel to dry wood to use as fuel seems a bit extreme.

Rapidtango · 29/08/2022 09:53

Whizzfizz, we play 'spot the logstore' when we're on holiday in France - there are some seriously impressive stores there.

Does anyone leave their woodburners on overnight? I was reading about some models yesterday and they had the overnight feature highlighted - is this cost effective use or just a massive expense and waste of money??

lobsterkiller · 29/08/2022 17:51

No I don't. I close up the vents a short time before I'm ready to go up.

Diyextension · 29/08/2022 17:52

Ours 5kw won’t stay in overnight with wood , bigger ones might ? Smokeless ovals will keep it hot over night and then just put wood in again in the morning.

we only do this in the dead of winter when it’s below freezing.

Beebumble2 · 29/08/2022 17:54

We have two, one wood and the other wood/ multi fuel, both stay in over night, but the multi fuel is easier to manage as the smokeless fuel keeps it ticking over. For the wood only stove, someone has to get up early to stoke it.
a word of caution about burning soft fir wood, it leaves a residue on the glass and in the workings of the stove. We avoid using it.

CantFindTheBeat · 29/08/2022 17:58

We had a wood burner installed early this year (luck rather than forward planning).

The stove, flue, installation and hearth came to £5.5k in total. The stove was available quite quickly. The installation team had a 6 week wait at the time.

In the South East last Nov seasoned ash was £85 a ton, Feb it was £95 a ton it is now £100 a ton.
We use about 4 tons over the winter, I use the wood burner to heat the main part of the house and reduce our oil bill.

Jakers that's a rise. We paid £36 a ton for oak in March 🙈

When your ordering a ton, how do you know the amount delivered is a ton ?

Honestly you get to know what a ton of logs looks like and my DH knows what effect it has on the suspension of the truck.
Experience and buying from a trusted firm of tree surgeons or log merchants.
