Solar panel installation - how much disruption?

Is there anyone here who has had solar panels installed recently who can tell me how bad the disruption was inside the house? I have twin toddlers and my DH reckons I will need to take them out the whole day they are being done, starting at 8am when the guys are arriving. We almost never go out over lunchtime as they don't nap well out and about, plus the sheer faff of providing lunch, snack, and drinks out, as well as keeping them busy for an entire day, by myself is really daunting. Will it really be that bad in the house?

No disruption for us other than WiFi off for 15 min. All the ‘wires’ go down to the circuit board and ours is in the garage. If yours is middle of house it might be different

Ours are being put in in a few weeks and I am expecting no disruption other than making them tea and also scaffolding is coming a week or so in advance

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 26/08/2022 18:58

As Phoney says. We worked throughout.

Strathyre · 26/08/2022 20:40

Thanks! I thought DH was blowing it out of proportion.

just asked DH in case we were in for a nasty surprise and he doesn't think so either other than a short break in power while they 'plug it in' at the end.

They had to do some work in the meter cupboard and at the fuse box but apart from that they were on the roof. My dc were also toddlers and I don’t remember going out or any huge disruption. The main problem was that the scaffolding disrupted the Sky signal!

I came here to ask this exact question. Household with two SEN kids.

OP would you come back when yours are installed and let us know how it went. Ours are not being installed until November

Midlifecritic · 02/03/2023 17:42

How loud is solar installation? Do installers have to come in your apartment? Our 400 unit apartment is getting solar and I’m 75 and don’t pretend to understand any of this. From what we’ve been to,d, so far, it appears the owners will benefit but not us.

Midlifecritic · 02/03/2023 17:51

And are there disruptions?

katieak · 02/03/2023 17:59

As PPs have said. Power off briefly 15-20 mins. There is some drilling sounds and the odd clang as they install but it's not constant noise and doesn't last long so I'm sure you won't need to go out. We WFH and it was fine. Or if you sit downstairs you'll probably barely notice it!

OddBoots · 02/03/2023 18:02

They needed to come in and out the house quite a lot so if there are small children then that needs watching if there is a risk of escapage but other than that the only disruption was 10 minutes with the power off )and the loud singing of the scaffolders when they installed and removed).

Calmdown14 · 02/03/2023 20:20

There's a bit of drilling noise as they install the rails and we had a fair bit of shouting as they directed each other to line them up.

The front door was open a lot early on as they needed in and out but we were also having a battery so bit more complex.

Where is your fuse box?

The house was cold as it was December and also had loft hatch wide open (for battery and inverter) but not overly disruptive and I worked from home throughout. Like others power only off briefly a couple of times.

Calmdown14 · 02/03/2023 20:23

Are the solar panels powering your individual apartments? If so they will just need access to your fuse box.

If not and it for communal areas or something else can't see they would need in

StatisticallyChallenged · 02/03/2023 20:23

Ours wasn't bad at all. Batteries and inverter are in the garage so he was in there a lot, up in the loft a bit, and at the fuse box quite a lot. But the rest of the house was completely untouched.

Noise wasn't that bad either really - the rails going in are a bit clangy but the rest was fine.

KleineDracheKokosnuss · 02/03/2023 20:33

No disruption here. It was fine and the power was only off for about 20 mins when they’d set it all up.

milkmonitor20 · 02/03/2023 20:40

I worked at home all day while they did it. There was a short window where I had to tether to my mobile for internet while the power to the router went off.

I have kids and would have been fine with them in the house while it happened.

Crazymadchickenlady · 02/03/2023 21:19

We had ours installed in December. Wasn’t very disruptive. A few days before they came and put the scaffolding up. On the day they did the roof, then some work in the loft (so loft access was needed), then a lot of work in the garage as that’s where the inverter and batteries are. Power was off for a bit and an odd bit of drilling.
