How to deal with unwanted furniture?

FruHagen · 23/08/2022 11:22

I have sadly got to clear out my parents house and there is lots of good quality furniture in it that no-one in the family has room for.

The Sue Ryder charity shop say they won't take it.

We have very limited time to get out of the house as the new buyers are moving in. It seems a shame to take it to the tip.

What can we do? Anyone have any ideas.

In Preston area if anyone wants it. Will need a big van.

I emailed British Heart Foundation in January about some items in my parents house , I know from he website they won't take tumble driers but there was some furniture that was solid and useable .

Didn't even get a reply ............Hmm

The house opposite me is being cleared at the moment by the young couple who bought it. They often leave things outside with a notice on to say people can take them and whatever it is gets taken in a few hours.

BHF are very fussy so I no longer bother with them. I have got rid of a lot of furniture for free on Facebook marketplace - it is a format for selling but you can offer stuff for free. Freecycle and local free sites on Facebook are also good. You can also ask on a local Facebook page if there is anyone in need such as refugees.

Thanks for all the brilliant advice everyone. We are trying a few of these, hopefully I won't have to take it all to a tip 😔

Could you speak to you local councillor about any specific schemes they may have? Ours have a "too good to waste" section actually at the tip so the workers wills direct you to it if you bring good quality stuff. It then gets sold by the council to raise income.

FatAgainItsLettuceTime · 23/08/2022 19:12

Our council have a furniture re-use scheme where they collect furniture and give it to people who have been housed in unfurnished homes.

If you google your council name and 'furniture re-use' they have one too.

Our tip/recycling centre has a container with renewal on the side, only noticed it a couple of weeks ago so perhaps new initiative. You can put household/furniture in it but soft furnishings have to have fire retardant mark on it. I googled it when I got home it goes to three shops in greater manchester and money made seems to go to charity👍

On the off chance that you or anyone else on this thread is in Leicester here's the details - www.leicester.gov.uk/your-environment/recycling-and-waste/reduce-and-reuse/reuse-furniture-bank-scheme/

In the past we’ve given it to British Heart Foundation, put it on Freecycle and donated to someone via our local church.

Redqueenheart · 23/08/2022 19:53

I gave some of my stuff to the British Heart Foundation. They sell furnitures in some of their shops. I was also able to arrange for them to come and collect everything.

We just gave away a couple of sofas on our local towns Facebook community page.

Goldmember · 23/08/2022 19:57

Facebook Groups, before the tip (Local town). We couldn't get rid of our old sofa until it went on there, collected a few hours later.

Try your local council social work department - they often need furniture for people taking up tenancies for the first time.

gift92.com

A Preston based charity that might take things off your hands

preston.gov.uk/bulkywaste

Try these if you’re stuck. They charge to take big items but they’re reliable and cheaper than a skip or man with a van.

www.ilovefreegle.org/explore/prestonfreegle

Freegle might be good to advertise what you have but you’re relying on people having the means to collect it etc.

www.freecycle.org/ is great
