If I was going to oil a squeaky hinge

Where exactly does the oil (WD40?) go?

On the bit that moves, inside it if possible.

AllAboutMargot · 22/08/2022 22:04

On the moving part.

Heartrate · 22/08/2022 22:04

But how do you get the oil in there?

Just drop some on top of the hinge and wiggle the door to work it in to the hinge. Keep repeating till the squeak goes.

Or if your like me and don't mind dirty hands, put some oil on your fingertips and massage the hinge, then wiggle the door. I use olive oil not WD40 though 🤣

Don't use oil , use a tiny bit of fairy ( or other thick washingup liquid)
Rub it in between the joints on the hinge

Don’t use WD40. It’s a water dispersal agent rather than a lubricant! It temporarily makes things seem better but it’s not the tool for the job.

Ah OK, that's why mentioned it. What do I need?

Olive oil, vegetable oil, thick washing up liquid, ky jelly, some vasaline, anything that's a lubricant.

Don't use the KY Jelly in front of the neighbours if they've popped round for a cuppa and you want to oil your hinges, they may get the wrong idea 😂

There's two types of wd40. One is silicone based for windows etc with rubber seals, the other is oil based. Get the right one first. Then spray, or pour via fine nozzle over the hinge with a large tissue underneath to catch drips. Then open/shut door a few times, then repeat with oil and open/shut. When it stops squeaking wipe over the area to remove excess oil.

One of the more satisfying jobs Grin

Any lube will stop your squeak. I'd suggest petroleum based oils, like for bike chain or sewing machine. They last longer and don't go weird. Use tiny amount and work it into all moving joins by opening/closing door many times. Have a cloth handy to catch all drips & wipe clean, or you get it on clothes.

Exactly what pixiedust said 👍

Post a pic of your hinge, because they vary.
