Etiquette for moving house and bins

We’re moving this week (packers are in right now), but I’m not sure what to do with the bins/rubbish

Obviously the house will be completely cleared but there will be some recycling and rubbish in the outside bins - is this ok? Our bin day is Monday so it will all be gone straight after the weekend.

Our buyers have been quite shitty so I’m not minded to go over and above what’s absolutely necessary…

Perfectly reasonable to leave rubbish inside the bins knowing they will be emptied on Monday

Anything that won't fit inside bins will need taking to the dump though before you leave

Wackynotion · 16/08/2022 13:06

The house I moved into had rubbish in the bins ready for the collection the following week. I wouldn't have expected the seller to take that rubbish to the tip, especially as it didn't cause me any inconvenience the rubbish being in the bins.

mrsed1987 · 16/08/2022 13:17

I think that's fine. Luckily for us we are moving tomorrow which is also our bin day! So we will just put the bins out and then they can bring them in

NewHouseNoMoney · 16/08/2022 13:22

As long as you put the right rubbish in the right bins, that’s fine, and expected.

My sellers were absolutely awful and filled the green and blue (grass and paper) bins with their non-recyclable rubbish. It was such shitty behaviour of them as they were knowingly passing their problem onto me.

(I emptied the bins and got them to come and collect it!)

girlmom21 · 16/08/2022 14:10

We left rubbish in the bins. As long as they're not full and it's just normal household waste I think it's fine.

mummyh2016 · 16/08/2022 14:17

No issue with leaving rubbish in the bins but regarding how full they are base it on when they're next due to be emptied. Eg if they've only been emptied the day before and it will be another fortnight before they'll be emptied again don't leave them full.

Pleasedontdothat · 16/08/2022 14:31

Great - it’s been such a long time since we moved and then we’d been abroad for a while so hadn’t been living in the flat we were selling.

Our buyers get the keys on Friday and bin day is Monday (weekly collection) and recycling goes in mixed sacks in the same bins as rubbish so no fiddly sorting required.

I shall now find something else to worry about 😂

As long as they are not full it’s fine, ours left them full and it was a right pain as not emptied for 2 more weeks and we obviously had a lot of packing material to get rid of. However they left the house spotless so we didn’t hold it against them!

HeddaGarbled · 16/08/2022 14:42

I left ours empty and having had a good clean inside, but it seems I’m in the minority.

Pleasedontdothat · 16/08/2022 14:59

Frankly our buyers have been so unpleasant that there’s no way I’m rinsing out bins for them! I’m going to do a quick once over with the hoover and mop and that’s their lot …

When we bought our house last year the bins were full to overflowing. I’ll never forget the state the vendor left them in. The owner was a horse rider, and the main bin had a massive bucket of horse manure and urine in it and it wasn’t due to be emptied until the following week. It was so heavy the bin men wouldn’t take it with the bucket. My DH had to go out and dispose of the bucket and he came back in the house with his cuffs soaked with horse urine. It absolutely stank. When the bin was finally emptied there were maggots in it. I’ve never seen anything so disgusting close up.

She also managed to get horse manure in the recycling bin. I had to wash out both bind with a whole bottle of Zoflora and washing up liquid.

As long as you don’t do that OP, you’ll be fine,

AchillesLastStand · 16/08/2022 18:38

bins not bind

BOOTS52PollyPrissyPants · 16/08/2022 19:03

When I moved here I left rubbish in bins as had paid for that month and for bins to be emptied. I rang the bins and had the cancellation all sorted so they collect the bins so up to the new owner/tenant to sort their own bins and they will get fresh clean bins.

BOOTS52PollyPrissyPants · 16/08/2022 19:06

Am in Ireland sorry so maybe it is different if you talking about u.k.

I left ours empty and having had a good clean inside, but it seems I’m in the minority.

Yes we completed our sale last week and from the last time we had the bins emptied we cleaned them and didn't use them. So our purchasers had clean and empty bins to welcome them. Did cause extra hassle for us in terms of taking our waste to the local HWRC. But it felt like a nice thing to do and it had been a relatively harmonius selling process for us. If our purchasers had behaved like I read some do on here, then I'm sure I would have not taken the same approach.

This ^

Don't do what our sellers did, and leave a dustbin overflowing so that it was not emptied in the usual slot.

I had to take their castoffs to the dump myself. No one wants to start their new life clearing other peoples rubbish.

I was coming to say this because it is exactly what the bloke we bought off did. Bin emptied the day before but it was absolutely rammed full, kitchen drawer still full of junk, various other stuff that needed to be in the bin and we had to spend 2 weeks carting our rubbing to the tip!

LittleGreenBeetle · 16/08/2022 20:06

I don't think a half full bin is an issue - but at this time of year, presumably it's quite likely that at least one of your neighbours will have been away so could you not ask if you could use someone else's bin?

Gaveitall · 16/08/2022 20:18

Rise above your buyers nastiness. Don’t let them have any reason to gossip about you to neighbours.
Leave your rubbish courteously & cleanly in the appropriate bins. It won’t be there long.

Let’s hope wherever you move to will also be courteous enough to have dealt with their rubbish responsibly.

If you do have to wash out bins at your new place I recommend Jeyes fluid. I use an old mop and bucket of hot water for the wheelie bin.

Good luck in your new home.

GOODCAT · 16/08/2022 20:23

We took our rubbish with us and left empty bins behind. They were not immaculately clean, but good enough.

GOODCAT · 16/08/2022 20:24

Should add I don't know what we were required to do under the contract, but just wanted to make sure the buyer had no cause for complaint.

0live · 16/08/2022 20:41

If your buyers have been difficult them remember to take detailed photos of the whole house just before you leave. Inc video clips of the shower / taps / central heating working, windows and doors being opened and closed, front door locking, ceiling lights working.

Stripedbag101 · 16/08/2022 21:20

When I left my house I left no rubbish. My new house had full bins and it was two weeks until collection!

the seller left a bottle of wine and an apology. Not a big deal - I just had to run to the dump a few times!

anglesee · 16/08/2022 21:46

When we moved in, one of the bins was full. No biggie. It was collected within about 3-4 days
