Heya
So we are in process of buying a house if all being well should be in by september just waiting to sign some paperwork and arrange exchange dates, I don't like to plan things in advance but this is the only positive thing keeping me going right now haha, we won't be buying anything new until moved in but just an idea on things. We have a small blocked up fireplace planning to fill with lots I have attached a pic, we have quite a big TV and I don't want it over the fireplace I think a mirror there instead would be better, thought about putting it on opposite wall however our TV won't be directly opposite TV and I thought this might look odd? I have listed the placement on things on the below I'd love to know your ideas!

I don't quite understand what you're planning to fill your fireplace with, but if you aren't using it as a fireplace I would put the TV above it and the sofa facing it on the other wall. You could then put a bookshelf or console on the wall where you currently have the sofa.

Do you have a photo of the room, maybe from the property details?

@WhiskerPatrol thank you, just going to fill with small logs I think, I saw another thread where so many people said not to put a TV above fireplace but I guess that's if you were actually using it for its purpose or had log burner etc, I have attached a couple of pics

This isnt very popular advice but if you watch the TV a lot then i think pointing the sofa at it is sensible. I also think you need to factor the light so you dont end up drawing your curtains all the time.

Getmoveon14 · 14/08/2022 10:22

If you don't want the TV above the fireplace I'd put it in the alcove next to fireplace. Then you can have sofas on the walls without windows. That way you can see fireplace, TV and outside

freehours · 14/08/2022 21:49

Yes you need TV in alcove next to fireplace. Don't have it above fireplace. And definitely don't have it the way you've arranged it - the sofa needs to face the TV. Put it in the alcove, and get multiple sofas.

Depends how you are using the room. What about a corner sofa, and build a unit in the alcove by the fireplace and have the tv on a (possibly remote) angled wall bracket so you can adjust the tv to the right angle when you are sat down, if you watch a lot of tv. That way the tv ill be out of the way for any other uses of the room. May not work if you have a big TV. A comfy chair in the window if you like reading for the light and I agree a mirror above the fireplace not a tv.

i'd keep the TV in the corner where it is at the moment, or even have it in front of the fireplace (depending on how big your TV is). you can make the TV show pictures of a glowing fire in the winter too.

then you'll have 2 walls available for sofas etc. Keep the little chair & table in the window but swap their locations so that the table is nearer the TV.

@freehours hello, you mean in the alcove on the wall? thank you! i really need to measure, its a big tv dont think it will fit haha

I would put the tv on the wall where you have put the sofa and the sofa opposite.

freehours · 15/08/2022 09:15

I meant this sort of thing. This isn't my house but we have a very similar set-up - built in shelves in both alcoves and a TV stand at the bottom of one alcove. Our TV is 40inch or something, and fits very comfortably.

Do you want to keep the fireplace? I hate looking up at a TV and kept it at eye level. We filled it in and have the big TV there instead.
I haven't missed the fireplace but love watching tele with my sofa not giving me a bad neck by looking up or turning sideways.

@Tinkerblonde1 I have never had a fireplace before so although its blocked and im filling with logs I think it will look lovely and definitely want to keep it, If it was up to me we would get one of them framed TV that looks like a painting when not in use my partner said no haha

If you mount the tv on an angled mount you can put it next to the fireplace or on the wall you are originally planning but when watching it you angle it towards the sofa. (We did this in a tricky layout living room) or could you put the sofa in the bay and the tv opposite - you’ll need to close the curtains to watch tv on a sunny day but not the end of the world.

PurBal · 15/08/2022 11:40

The room will flow a lot better if the tv faces the fireplace but it may not be practical.

As Hayley says, TV in the alcove to right of fire. Angle it so the window light doesn't hit it. Get a TV to fit your alcove or it can over hang slightly, it's not a big deal. Sofa on the opposite wall. You could get two separate sofas or an L shaped one. By putting the TV on the opposite wall to the fireplace, seating is awkward.

I have this room layout and it works and flows.

Cyberworrier · 17/08/2022 07:00

@Hayleydobedoo I have a tv that looks like a picture above fireplace! It's great. Samsung frame. People genuinely think it's a picture and ask where our tv is. A friend just bought one she liked it so much.
It's a bit like being at cinema as in gaze slightly up rather than just across looking at it, but the room is wide so we aren't straining our necks to look upwards.

TiaraBoo · 17/08/2022 10:45

The current pic has a sofa in the window, would you consider that and put the TV on the wall opposite the window? Then sofas windiw and remaining walk, then the fireplace is free to be looked at as a feature.
