We have recently moved house and have a fireplace in the lounge.
I am trying to work out if it is original or not.

Anyone good at dating fireplaces?

I am deliberately not revealing the age of the house...

Please help me date my fireplace

Guessed 1950s but from 2nd pic, I'll go with 1980s

WinterMusings · 10/08/2022 18:35

I presume you want to put its approximate age on its gravestone??

surely 1980's???

ThePomegranateClause · 10/08/2022 18:36

1940s I'd say.

This didn’t get the attention it deserves

EmergencyHepNeeded · 10/08/2022 18:37

I think it's pretty new, in the last 20 to 30 years. There's nothing about it that suggests it's vintage.

1960s at a guess?

Lindy2 · 10/08/2022 18:40

I don't think it's particularly old. The bricks look fairly modern, as does the design really. I'd say 1980s. It may well have replaced an older fireplace as I imagine many houses from the 1980s wouldn't include a hearth or chimney.

Hmmph · 10/08/2022 18:40

Thanks all.
House is late 1920s. Was just double checking it wasn't original!

No idea, but it's quite neatly done with a tiny bit of builder style and won't have been cheap. It doesn't look used for an open fire. I'd be more keen to know it had a proper flue and a look at the chimneys. I'd say Thirties.

Riapia · 10/08/2022 18:46

From the condition of the bricks I would say early 21st century.

bloodywhitecat · 10/08/2022 18:46

This is my hideous 1920s fireplace

mocktail · 10/08/2022 18:56

My guess would be 1980s but I wouldn't be sure. If you Google 1920s brick fireplaces there are some similar including this one: www.houzz.co.uk/discussions/3064956/need-help-with-1920-s-brick-fireplace

I'm guessing you'd keep it if original, rip out if a relatively recent addition?

mocktail · 10/08/2022 18:58

The one I linked to mentions slim rounded bricks, which yours appears to have too.

CaroleFuckingBaskin · 10/08/2022 19:03

80s

notanicepersonapparently · 10/08/2022 19:03

I would have said 1940s but this bricks don't look right. They look quite rough and original ones would have been made out of a finer clay. Also those side shelves aren't right for the earlier date.

bilbodog · 10/08/2022 19:05

I was going to say 1920s………. It might be original.

chouxfleur · 10/08/2022 19:05

1980s

OppsUpsSide · 10/08/2022 19:06

I would have guessed 1930’s but I can’t see any sign of open fires having been used in it? And if a gas fire was fitted later the surround may well have been changed at that point.

BRAVO

Seeline · 10/08/2022 19:09

The floor tiles maybe original. The bricks at the back are older. The brickwork at the front is far too clean and the mortar is fairly recent. I'm inclined to say 21st century.

floppybit · 10/08/2022 20:01

My auntie had one of these, it was original to her 1950s house

LemonApplePeach · 10/08/2022 20:44

Those bricks look brand new so I'm going to say max 5yrs old but built in a cottagey style

Hmmph · 10/08/2022 20:53

It has had a gas fire in it at some point, but could have been added after the fireplace as there is some damage at the edge where it was put it.

I think the tiles can't be original - they don't seem good enough for a fire and they are peeling a bit like they are painted.

I am trying to decide whether to get rid of it or keep it. Either way with a woodburner.

I quite like it's quirkiness. Everyone else fireplace looks the same these days. Not sure if I'm just a bit weird though!
