Does anyone have a macerater toilet?

We are getting an en suite in our loft conversion. There is a nice little nook round the side where an en-suite would go perfectly. However, a contractor has said they can't attach the waste pipe there as it's at the front of the house & too far from the existing system. We can use a macerater toilet

They also suggested putting the en suite in a more inconvenient place where we'd have to move a window, where we could use a normal toilet

Are macerater toilets awful & loud? Or are they fine?....
thanks!

We had a macerator p in our old house.
Used regularly for over 10 years.
Never clogged.
But it was mostly just dh and I used it and only toilet paper and wee and poop ever went down it.

My sister had one and had loads of hassle with it. Hers was downstairs though and she ended up paranoid about visitors putting paper down the thing or sanitary towels as that would block it.
An en suite one would be easier as you could just use it for weeing. But generally they are a bit of a nightmare so if there is another option, take it.

We have one in our ensuite. Had it 8 years now. It services sink, shower and loo. I get it serviced every other year which is £120 from our local saniflow approved plumbers.
We use proklean macerator cleaner off amazon probably every 3-4 months. Amazing stuff. I use it in the other loos now too to get rid of any limescale.
I also use "who gives a crap" loo roll, it's amazing for the macerator as it dissolves almost. I was told not to use quilted as it doesn't break up well and get stuck round the blades.
It does make a bit of a noise when flushed. It lasts about 3-4 seconds longer than the cistern refilling.
I do make sure I clean the shower hair trap regularly and when my husband decides to shave he does do it in the family bathroom as normally waits for it to get to an inch long before he does and worries all the hair will block it.

Next door has one, really fucking noisy when they use it at 5am!

I lived in a flat with one in an en-suite. Loud horrific thing that as pp have said, becomes a urinal for the males!
It blocked up all the time. Lucky as a renter it wasn't our bill to pay but saying that we felt bad calling someone out eventually and just stopped using it.

We have one in our en-suite. I had one growing up so knew how to treat it, however we have been here 3 years and had a few explosions for one reason or another

The latest unexpected one was when my son was in our shower. He was playing with / using quite a lot of soap.
One of the caps popped off the saniflow due to the pressure of the bubbles going through it and there was soapy wee / poo water flying everywhere!!
we are currently in the process and moving & I said “thank god we don’t have one of these on the new house!”

We have one that’s broken in a WC in our entrance hall and we’ve not bothered fixing it yet. I couldn’t believe it when they told us how expensive it would be.

Can I be rude and ask how much? Ours has been broken for years, but we are selling soon and need it to be working again. I regret ever having one, we just gave up on it after a couple of fixes and having to clean it out. It send filthy water through the ceilings last time.

We've got a basement utility room and shower room and have two macerators. One pumps the washing machine water from the utility room and the other pumps the shower, loo and basin from the shower room. We put them in five years ago as there wasn't a viable alternative.

We haven't had any problems with either of them. We're fairly careful about what goes down, we use Who Gives a Crap loo roll and don't use bleach. Soft water area so no problems with limescale. It wouldn't have been my first choice but better than nothing.

Only when flushed and odd accasion through day and night once or twice, i have one in bedroom so not to have comode cannot use lots of paper though ive got smart seat on toilet so gives wash and dry so dont need lots of paper

DyslexicPoster · 21/12/2023 01:04

Don't do it if you have any other choice. Extremely unpleasant when they go wrong.

ParadiseLaundry · 21/12/2023 01:23

We have one and I had no idea you weren't supposed to use bleach in them until I read this thread! Can you use toilet cleaners like harpic?

Ours was in the house when we bought it 10 years ago (no idea how long it had been in before we bought the house) and we had it replaced this year as the motor wore out on it but we didn't have any problems for the 10 years.

brainworms · 21/12/2023 01:25

I have one and they are an absolute pain in the arse. Loud and also break if you look at them the wrong way.

northernlasses · 21/12/2023 01:27

I've been told they are much better nowadays than they used to be, ie quieter etc

Damnedidont · 21/12/2023 01:28

We have a sign reminding people not to put anything other than toilet paper down it. Didn't stop some idiot flushing her dirty knickers down there! It can be a bit noisy but it's also very convenient as no other toilet could be fitted where this one is.

Twiglets1 · 21/12/2023 07:09

My sister had one in a downstairs loo and it kept getting blocked because of people putting sanitary products down it. She put a note up in the loo telling people not to but they still did occasionally and that meant the plumber had to come out. If you do get one be very careful about what goes in it.

WombatChocolate · 21/12/2023 10:31

Fine if it’s for use by a limited number of people who understand about its use and not putting wrong stuff down. So, en-suite bathroom prob okay. Areas with lots of visitors or unreliable children etc not so good. Def not good for main loo.

Where it’s macerator or nothing and you really need the extra loo, it’s good.

Definitely have sign up. Tell people too if you think you need to.

Have had one for 10 years without probs. Not used that much though. One user said they didn’t like it because of noise. It’s actually not really noisier than normal flush….just that we are v familiar with normal flush noise and not macerator noise. I asked if they’d rather not have the en-suite and go down to the main bathroom to avoid the noise. Answer was ‘no’. So there you go. Compromises often necessary. If gains outweigh downsides then go to r it.

GasPanic · 21/12/2023 12:18

I'm bemused by the "turns into men only urinal" comments.

Are women not capable of only pissing in toilets or have I missed something ?

I have heard these things are problematic, you need to be careful what you put down them, and fixing them is horrible.

But if they are to be used say as an en suite where you are not exposing them to random outside members of the family I think that they would be fine. Not having to walk through the house and climb two flights of stairs in order to have a piss at night is beneficial, and if they make a huge amount noise you can always wait until the morning to flush them.

PigletJohn · 21/12/2023 19:10

Anybody who has never confronted a failed macerator can look on them benignly.

PigletJohn · 21/12/2023 19:13

This is better.
