Complete in two weeks - anything I've left off the check list?

We're FTBs, have already exchanged and are gearing for our move, but wanted to check with you wise owls that we haven't missed anything off our checklist, or if you have any smart tips in general for the move?

So far we have:

  • Bought buildings and contents insurance
  • Bought life insurance
  • Prepared a will
  • Informed all utility suppliers (water, gas, electric, internet provider, council tax) of our move
  • Written down a list of all companies to change address
  • Paid for a Royal Mail redirect for one year
  • Bought all essential 'big' furniture (we're in a furnished rental so had to buy most things from scratch!)
  • Hired a transit van for the two days after completion
  • Booked an end of tenancy clean
  • Started clearing out and packing room by room
Thanks so much in advance!

Sounds comprehensive to me. I’m also moving in next couple of weeks. Have you sorted out a new GP if you are moving out of area?

Jaggerdagger · 07/08/2022 11:13

@Denny53 Thanks and good luck for your move! Meant to mention that we are staying in the same town so no need for change of GP etc 😊

We’re moving in 3 weeks so watching for anything I’ve missed.

What about cars? You’ll need new driving licences as well as changing the address on the log book. We totally forgot about the log book last time we moved and ended up with 2 huge fines we had no idea about!

Jaggerdagger · 07/08/2022 11:25

@Startuplife THANK YOU - this completely slipped my mind! Now to locate my log book (hopefully it's in the glove box...!)

For lists of people to contact re change of address, I found it helpful to subdivide into lists. So everything for the car - insurance/driver licence/log book/warranty etc. same for club cards, utilities, leisure/hobbies, finances et etc. don’t forget to change stuff which seems unimportant (specsavers!) or only once a year paperwork - eg pension statement online.
make sure you notify your employer too, and your Gp/dentist even though you are staying with them.

don’t forget to take meter readings before you leave and upon arrival at your new home. And take a photo of them - you never know if that might be useful.

purchase replacement locks including padlocks for gates/sheds/garages for new house, so they can be changed asap. Cheaper than a lock smith and easy to do. Plus you KNOW no one else has a spare key.

enjoy you new home!

ChessieFL · 07/08/2022 11:44

Have you thought about curtains etc for new house? Current ones may not fit/ you may have more windows in new house. Check if curtain rails will be left in the new house as you may need to buy these too.

ChessieFL · 07/08/2022 11:47

Do you have Sky? If so you need to contact them to get it installed at new house.

SuperCamp · 07/08/2022 16:36

Don’t keep your car log book in the car!

Wombat27A · 07/08/2022 16:40

Building insurance from the day you exchange, not complete (unless they are the same day.)

Wombat27A · 07/08/2022 16:42

Which they aren't, must read more slowly!

WeAreTheHeroes · 07/08/2022 16:56

Change of address with HMRC, employers, banks, store cards, loyalty card programmes and GP.

No! You shouldn't keep the v5 in the car.

Jaggerdagger · 07/08/2022 16:59

It's not in the car, don't worry, I was being stupid (only been driving a year) and confused it with the handbook 😂

Good to know!

YankeeDad · 07/08/2022 22:31

Pack suitcases with clothes and personal care / hygiene items for the first 2-3 days, as if you were going on a trip to an AirBNB. That way when you are in the new place and unpacking, you will have easy and quick access to the essentials.

You may also want to pack a "Day 1" kitchen box with kitchen roll, dish soap / sponge, essential crockery and cutlery for the first day or two.

Thesehills · 08/08/2022 10:03

This is great - we move on the 25th.

Don't forget the loft if you've anything up there!

This is fantastic advice. Thank you so much!

Would you all recommend doing the flat pack furniture first after we move in so that it's empty and easier for us to put things up? We have to assemble a triple wardrobe, a chest of drawers and a tallboy!

Good luck @Thesehills 🍀

Nothing in the loft, luckily!

Electoral roll when you move.

WeAreTheHeroes · 08/08/2022 19:47

Good one Cornish

Don’t forget odd things like PayPal, online only pensions, and services like dbs and the AA/RAC, etc
online shopping you do - amazon/next/supermarket home delivery.
