Lorries causing house to shake

Does anyone have a similar experience and can impart any advice? I live in an old building, located right on a main road. The road has been patched up over the years and has been dug up and patched up for utility cables etc. While there are no huge pot holes, the road surface is visibly uneven and not smooth which results in my house shaking/vibrating considerably everytime a lorry or bus passes ( I estimate the number of hgv / bus movements to be in the hundreds per day). It can be felt in every room of the house. When in the attic, I can hear creaks and cracks from the roof and timber, and while down stairs, the building shakes (a lot) while the vehicles bump their way over long the road.

The lorries start about 6.15am and this is usually what wakes me. I have previously wrote to the local authority who sent me a generic response and in short said there was no issue with the road.

What can I do? This greatly affects my quality of living and enjoyment of my home, not to mention the damage that's likely being caused to the buildig. I struggle to see that this is normal and should be accepted as such.
Thanks so much

This is totally normal. Do you rent, if so move. It’s just what happens when you live next to a busy road,

Thank you everyone. I am reassured to hear this is normal.

Just been through this OP, a Victorian stone built house with very thick walls, on a fairly minor A road, 60mph limit past our bit. Traffic noise etc was fine for a few years, didn't bother us, but council changed speed limits in the villages at either end of this road to 20, so drivers were so glad to get out of the 20 limits they speeded up even more, with crazy speeding. Was told speed cameras cannot be put up until someone is killed in a road accident. This actually happened about a mile down the road, but still no cameras. Added to this our stretch of road between the two villages was resurfaced which made the noise and vibration much worse. So yes, things can change. Contacted council, police, MPs, etc etc, nothing to be done. So we moved.

We are living in a close and the main road is about 150 metes away from the house. The back of the house is facing the road and it sits on a hill which is probably about 2 meters above the road level. The place is only 35 years old. We can't really see any cracks in the walls etc., however we can feel the vibration and hear cracking noise from the attic at night.
Should we be concerned about it?

C4tastrophe · 03/09/2023 07:33

@Tomek77 the attic noise could just be the roof cooling down at night.
What’s it like in the winter?

Tomek77 · 03/09/2023 17:17

Hi @C4tastrophe@C4tastrophe
Thank you very much for your reply.
I was away for the whole winter this year, so I don't know. Previous years I wasn't really paying attention or noticing it.
I just spent a week in the bedroom recovering from an operation and every time a large vehicle goes by I can feel the house vibrating and cabinet doors rattling.
Can't see any visible cracks on the outside walls of the house, but I am a bit worried ro be honest.

God knows how happy I’m to see your message.
We could mortgage a timber frame house after many years of working hard and just after few days noticed the same issue that your experiencing.
Not only the heavy vehicles but the speeding cars even if someone walking around. Upstairs shaking and on living room feels like there’s earthquake!
it really affects our life and we can’t enjoy our life, we really appreciate your replies and shearing experience.

thank you

Yes... we've just moved into a 1980s link detached on a busy road. Buses and heavy trucks make our home vibrate too! I feel it sitting in the living room and upstairs too - it alarmed us on our first night - we actually wondered if it was a minor earthquake!!!
Getting used to it now...
We had a survey done before we bought it and it was fine.
I agree that wall paper is a good idea for minor cracks in walls though! Bring on the anaglypta! 🤭
