Underfloor heating and pet food

We are mid build on a kitchen extension and having underfloor heating installed. Would it be crazy to leave a cold spot for the cat’s food bowls/ water? DH thinks I’m losing my mind and I admit I’m over thinking everything 🤣
if you have underfloor heating and a pet have you had any issues with their wet food getting warm? Does it smell?
Our cat can take hours to eat a small packet and I’m worried it will get hot and smell on a heated floor.
Thanks!

You could get a marble mat for her dishes?

PigletJohn · 02/08/2022 00:19

Marble itself will not help if it is on the floor.

A small platform or table raised off the floor enough that air can circulate under it should make the difference.

That’s actually genius. They should put a cold spot for bins too thinking about it!

Our current house was a number of zones. One 2.5 x 2.5 m square in a corner was zoned separately and turned off. Only in passing convo with a neighbour who visited the house did we find out that has the location for the mini grand piano. Apparently had to have its own special temperature lol 😂

So it’s defo doable and a ‘thing’

Thanks everyone. I’ll ask the builder to leave a bit with no pipes and I’ll also see if she’ll eat out of raised dishes.
The point about the bin I hadn’t thought of! But I don't want to heat my rubbish either…. No pianos to accommodate 😊

Actually, I left a cold patch in case the dogs ever needed to cool down.
My SIL has underfloor heating throughout and my dog pants a lot when we visit. So cold patches are something to think about.

NoParticularPattern · 02/08/2022 11:15

Be aware that the heat will still travel though. So you’ll need to leave a much larger cold spot than you think you will. We have left 2x2.5m for our island (plus the bits at the walls for the rest of the units obviously) and in reality the cold spot is only really noticeable in the very middle of that area as the heat travels quite considerably.

@NoParticularPattern I think we’ll have to go with a combination of all of the above suggestions - so a patch with no pipes, a bowl on a stand (if the fussy cat can be persuaded) and maybe put it on some sort of insulated pad.
Builder’s suggestion was get rid of the cat… she’s a git but she’s our git so we’ll have to accommodate her wishes!

you don't put heating under the kitchen units, so there's an unheated area round the edges. Maybe extend it further than the units so there is a patch for the cat?

If you have a Christmas tree that you store presents under as well have a think about where that goes too. Saves finding all the chocolate in wrapped presents melted when you open them on Christmas Day.
