Bin etiquette

I'm a little unsure how to proceed with this situation and wondered what people's thoughts on the situation are and then they think could be done.

We just moved into a garden flat and our neighbours above and next door have an access route that runs down the side of the building. Turns out that down this walkway they keep all their bins. These bins are right next to a bedroom window, all that separates is the fence. We would like these bins moved, because the rubbish is stinky and unsanitary, with the potential for lots of flies etc.

Do you think it's okay to keep bins in this situation by a neighbours window and what could be done about it?

Is there anywhere else on the property they could be kept?

Is there somewhere else they could go? I'd talk to the neighbours and suggest moving the bins.

Wheely bins? If the lids are shut there really shouldn't be any smell. My own are near my lounge and bedroom windows and no smell, no flies.

Mine are near my front door and don’t smell either or have flies...
perhaps it’s nappies making the smell?

Wheely bins and food bins, which means rotting organics. Also, they have a dog, so doo doo in the bins.

I think if they're your bins, then you're probably very conscious to tie everything up properly and prevent spillages and smells...but if it's neighbours they don't have that personal requirement.

We wouldn't choose to put our bins by our windows/door, aren't they usually put somewhere away as they contain waste? Unless of course there isn't another option.

We'll certainly request for them to be moved, it feels like a reasonable request? I suppose then it's purely at their discretion, nothing more can be done.

Is there someone else? Is this the easiest place to keep them? How many years have they been kept there- I'm assuming it's always been the accepted place. You can ask, but they're not oblidged to facilitate you if that's where they always go. Where do yours go?

Are the bins actually smelly, or are you just expecting them to be? Our bins (including bagged dog shit) don't attract flies at all, and only smell when they are briefly open for more to be added.

You can ask, of course, but they may not have anywhere else to put them.
