Not happy with floor

We have had a floor sanding man come to our house to sand and put an oil varnish on the floor. However, he left yesterday and on closer inspection the floor has specks of black fibres in it (I saw a black type rag he was using when I went to check on him). I also had to leave him whilst I had to go out with my children when he was finishing his job. When I got home we noticed a hole in our wall (only small) and some of his oil or varnish dripped down one of our doors - I’m not happy and we’ve only just realised this. He also helped himself to drink from our fridge without asking! I’m due to pay him £200 after paying him £500 initially for the works. I’m not sure how best to proceed but at the moment I am not happy with the finished works along with the damage he has caused to our property although only minor, I’m still irritated by his clear dishonesty. What would you do?

Bring up the issues and get him to fix them before payment

Should I contact him or wait until he asks for payment?

No you call him on Monday and say that you have a few snags he needs to deal with before final payment.

I’m really worried he might ‘turn on me’ if I mention that I am not happy. He came across as a bit of a Jack the lad/gift of the gab. So not sure how he will react if I say I am not happy. Oh and he also made me help him carry some of his machinery up our stairs and used our bin bags to carry the sawdust away… hence he clearly couldn’t care less and I don’t think he will be less than pleased but neither am I!

Awful for you to feel like he may turn on you, he has carried out work in YOUR home and you are paying him. I think you should just be straight up with him - he doesn't sound like a very good tradesman in my opinion. I hope you get it sorted

Did you not meet him before he did the work?

Yes I did, he seemed polite etc but guess that was all a ploy now. He was due to come back today but didn’t and made an excuse so sent a text message saying he will be coming tomorrow morning instead with someone else!! I highly doubt he will. I don’t think I want him back at my house now, think I’d rather just get someone else to come and sort out his mess. Obviously at extra expense to me but I just don’t want me to ever see him again!
