If you've lately replaced your windows...

...how much did it cost you? I have 20 windows, of varying sizes, that are getting on a bit. 3 story victorian terrace, a couple of tall windows and bay windows, a velux as well, all starting to show their age, leaking air, difficult to open/close, sealant peeling away, double glazing blown, etc.

Nothing that's causing damage to the house, they are waterproof, but ageing nonetheless. I'm wondering how long they can limp along before disaster strikes! And how pricey it will be when it does....

£8.5k for 13 windows of varying sizes (from tiny 0.5mx0.5m) to large (3mx3m).

NDandMe · 23/07/2022 18:26

Thanks, @user143677433 - that's about what I expect, and will probably need to budget for higher by the time I get around to it.

10k = 2x five window bay, front and back door, French doors, pus another seven windows of varying sizes. Some have blinds in the glass.

Spanielsarepainless · 23/07/2022 18:34

We replaced our windows in the last house. I can't answer your question as it was almost two decades ago, but I would say don't use Everest. Gorgeous windows but utterly crap customer service afterwards.

Augend23 · 23/07/2022 18:36

Probably a bit early given you're just thinking about it, but I would seriously consider making sure you fit windows that you can fit shutters onto the outside of when you do change - I can't because mine are standard outward opening PVC ones and I think it will be invaluable as the heat we experience increases.

HouseIsOnFire · 23/07/2022 18:37

I've just accepted a quote (pvc acoustic glass) for 4.7k for four windows 2mx1m, two windows 2mx50cm and one window 1.5m x 90cm

PragmaticWench · 23/07/2022 18:44

We got aluminium frames. Ten windows of various sizes, plus three bay windows of five panes each, and then two sets of french doors. 13k. The bays included new lead on the roof of each outside.

Dotcheck · 29/07/2022 22:11

I just had a window salesman in… I was really stupid and responded to a fb Help2buy thing ( weak moment!)

They quoted 12 grand for 4 regular upvc windows and standard sized patio doors

SpottyStripyDuvet · 29/07/2022 22:13

I have just paid £3.5k for 2 windows and a composite door.

TowelChair · 30/07/2022 16:48

£50k. They’re hard wood. Includes 15 large windows and 4 sets of French doors with sidelights. I went with Meranti, rather than Accoya to save about £10k

Rollerbird · 30/07/2022 16:53

8k 13 front of house. Double fronted victorian inc sliding sashes

LemonSwan · 30/07/2022 16:57

We didn’t replace we restored original hardwood sashes We had c. 18 full height sash windows (2m x 1m) which included 4 bays. It cost just under 20k but was a full restoration (stripping back to wood, replacing rotten wood with accoya, upgrade to slim line self cleaning double glaze, toughened too in upstairs,, repainting, reweighting and new hardware etc.). They are beautifully done. Can slide up and down with one finger.

£5800 for a 3 bed (rented out) semi. New back door but not front.

Work starts next week. Windows are arrived the warehouse & I’ve not even been asked for a deposit. Amazing. Two days work.

Don’t pay the first price: haggle because there’s lots of competition out there.

Had my own house done (3 beds) last summer. Just over £6k with new front door (worth about £1k) but not back. Was 2 days work for two men.

I got 3 quotes & went with the ones who convinced me they were right for the job. Length of time in local business, references etc. I asked a lot of questions & observed the body language when answering but, that’s just my intuitive nature!

ohblowmedown · 30/07/2022 17:48

I would ask on next door or your local Fb for recommendations- we used a local family company for ours (some years ago so prices not relevant) and their after sales service has been excellent. We had a door handle break after 12 years and they still replaced for free.

Beakyok · 30/07/2022 17:50

How on earth have people got such low quotes? I’ve just been quoted £18k to replace 11 windows with one of them being patio doors and a front door. I’m waiting on two more quotes - in the midlands. I was hoping it would be around the £10k mark.

I assume their is some pps with absolute bargains and got very good prices and decent quality. But there will also be pps who have lower quality stuff.

Like a front door for example. You can spend 100 if you manage to find a reclaim right size on eBay, 500 for a shitty door unfinished standard softwood door, or you can spend 5000+ on an all singing all dancing heritage replica hardwood custom fit with custom etched windows, detailing, prefinished in custom farrow and ball colours etc. Or you can spend 10k+ on a actual Crittal

Chasingsquirrels · 30/07/2022 18:57

I'm in the middle of getting quotes.
12 windows (as pictured plus on the side there is also 2 x 1 panel smaller windows and a 1 panel double height widow which I'm having as a tilt & turn so it can be used as a door), patio door, front composite door & back upvc door.

2 quotes, both very similar.
Just under and just over £12k, for white upvc windows and a coloured composite door.

Now decided I'm going for rosewood upvc outside and white inside, and maybe a composite rather than upvc back door and am just waiting for the prices for that.

Both local firms, one smaller, one larger.
Just outside Cambridge.

£18k, two bay windows, 2 large windows, and one smaller window (1m2), plus repainted front door. All sash with painted wood and double glazed. This was 3yrs ago.

CatLadyDrinksGin · 30/07/2022 19:10

£4k for 3 large windows, one small window and a bespoke solidor front door.

AlwaysAnonymous · 30/07/2022 19:19

For windows alone it was somewhere around £16k to £18k. The total price was £20k and included three large bay windows (all made up of six individual windows), porch like area, dormer, bathroom/kitchen windows, upstairs bedroom window, French doors with sidelights and two composite doors. We also had our barge boards, soffits and fascia’s replaced which they did at discount because of the large order.

AlwaysAnonymous · 30/07/2022 19:21

Oh and also all the guttering which is the deep flow guttering.

I should’ve added our windows are white uPVC and all have the ‘dummy’ sashes on them.

Mumteedum · 30/07/2022 19:31

9k for x1 composite front door and side panel in frosted glass, x2 large rear windows, x1 upvc back door and sliding patio doors.

I thought was quite expensive. Had a quote for 2k less somewhere else a year a but did not feel sure about the company.

Netaporter · 31/07/2022 01:26

@LemonSwan who did you use for your sash window restoration? Pls PM me if you don’t want to share publicly. Thank you!

SlipperySlope99 · 09/08/2022 09:20

Just had 4 large upvc dummy windows, 4 smaller upvc and large French doors with 2 large glass side panels £7200

Clutterbugsmum · 09/08/2022 10:16

We were quoted roughly £11k for 6 windows the same size (about 4ftx4ft), 1bigger (about 7ftx4ft), 1 (about 3x3ft) smaller and a sliding door. The sliding door will be around £2300
