Am I doing something wrong? My gas and electric bill seems off

I'm with SSE Topped up £40 pounds gas and electricity so £20 on each on 25th of June.. And I still have £10 left on my balance
This is my first time living away from home so just wondering if this is normal
I live alone in a one bed flat
Have a relative that also lives alone in a one bed flat and his bill is 140 a month so I'm wondering if there's something wrong with mine

Mine was £55 total for June, on a fix 15% above the cap. Two people in a three bed.

Well it is summer so I assume you haven't got heating on.

£30 for 22 days is £41 a month which sounds reasonable for one person

Sounds like you are on a pay as you go system whereas they are probably paying by direct debit (where you pay an equal amount over 12 months, so you aren't then paying lots more in winter when you have the heating on).

Hi,
The standing charges use a fair bit (googling suggests electricity standing charge is capped at 45p a day and gas at 27p - might be slightly different for pre-payment.

Whether your bill could be right? I think if you are a low user running a fridge and charging your phone/the odd shower it could be. If you run lots of appliances all day and have daily long showers/cook a lot etc then I would think it is wrong.

Are you sure the meter you are topping up and checking is yours? Is it in your flat or in a place with multiple meters. Could you be topping up an empty flat?

Yes, my direct debit is £95 and I don't even use much heating in winter, last actual bill £55.

When we lived in a one bed rented flat with pre payment meters we spent approx 50p a day on electric and £1 a day on gas (heating was gas, but it was a really warm flat as the people downstairs had their heating on all the time).

Sounds about right to me, my bill for 5 June to 5 July with actual readings was just under £120, but that's 4 adults and a baby that generates a lot of washing!

What everyone else is saying is pretty much it: if you pay a monthly bill, you pay the same amount all year to cover the higher cost of winter. So your relative will pay £140 every month, in July with the heating off, and in December when the heating is on. But you'll pay say £40 this month, and then your bill in December will be A LOT higher. Just don't get comfortable with this being your normal monthly usage because once you start using your heating it will be considerably more expensive.
