House near pylon

Hi, we are looking to buy our first home, we already have 4 children so with the cost of living we don’t have a crazy big budget unfortunately.

we have seen a lovely house in a close which has potential to fit us all nicely, however there is an electrical pylon in the field behind the house. You can see it from the top back windows. My husband said we can plant big trees across the back fence but you will still see it!

my question is would you buy a house near a pylon? I’m wondered if this is going to have to be the compromise for a bigger living space! However if we want to move in 5-10years I don’t want to no be able to sell it!!

thank you currently loosing sleep over what to do! Such a shame as the house is perfect for our family

Watch the first 50 seconds of this for a view on electricity pylons Grin

I bought a flat near pylons and it did bother me but like you I had a limited budget. I got someone from the national grid to come and do a measurement of the electromagnetic radiation ( after I’d bought it, and it was free) and he said it was not higher than in an average home so that was reassuring.

I lived right next to a pylon growing up for about 10 years! It was so close (maybe 20m?) from my bed, I could hear it buzzing when it rained! We also used to play underneath the pylon and climb on it - this was back in the 90s 😂. No ill health effects on me or any of my family.

We looked at a house that had the photos taken from a specific angle so we didn't know about the pylon. As soon as we pulled up we saw it and I was fuming. Agent arrives and I said there is no point in us going in as I wouldn't purchase a house with a pylon behind it. He got a bit arsey and said I had wasted his time and I replied if you had been truthful in your photos then neither of us would have had our time wasted.

Its for health reasons I wouldn't purchase them. Others will have different opinions but I wouldn't go near one if it was close.

The same thing happened to us. The pylon and high voltage lines were clearly visible in other agents pictures but not the one we booked through! Unfortunately we didn't discover this until too late.

Although we'd had a 2 hour trip to view we didn't even go in. Complete deal breaker for me I'm afraid.

The pylon being an eyesore would be the least of my concerns....I'd be more worried about living near the strong electromagnetic fields....and yes I know we can't escape radiation what with wifi, mobile phones etc....however power lines give off much stronger fields for obvious reasons. The idea of hearing the lines buzz when it rains just gives me the heebie jeebies....

I had several down the road from my previous house.

When I walked near them I was surprised how much noise they made. It wasn’t just the buzzing noise, they seemed to crackle when it was frosty or icy.

They were far enough from my house not to affect its value.

Fairly illogically I struggled with them due to a very specific recurring childhood dream about being abandoned in ‘the room at the top’ of a pylon ( yes, ridiculous I know), and was a bit relieved when we moved.

Aren't they creepy when they buzz...?

I thought I was the only one who had recurrent pylon nightmares, I have dreams where I wake up and look out of my window to see pylon legs wrapped around my house, or I'll be trapped on top of a pylon with no idea of how I got up there and am too frozen with fear to climb down....shudders

No. I would never buy a house with pylons close by - Or in view, even if from a distance.

I had a pylon dream too 😭
I dreamt I woke up and one had been installed in my front garden. It was massive.

Now they give me the creeps and I'm always fascinated when I see one very close to houses.<shudder>

Same. Not if I could see even a glimpse of one in the distance

It wouldn't bother me. I was going to buy a property with a pylon nearby a few years ago. It didn't go ahead for other reasons but, at the time, I spoke fairly extensively to one of the physicists I work with and he said he thought any health risks were very low and he would happily live near one.

alexdgr8 · 19/07/2022 22:43

no definitely not.

We bought near pylons and then in a real bonus they were removed and the cables put underground instead!
