How much did it cost to furnish your home?

Just moved into my dream home which needs a lot of work! How much did it cost to furnish your home?

We have been buying furniture over the course of years, so hard to put a figure to jt - but this will vary vastly depending on size of property, how many reception rooms and bedrooms etc? Not to mention there is something for every budget, will you buy new from say John Lewis, IKEA or used from Facebook marketplace?

I'd make a list of what main items you will need to fill the different rooms, then browse various websites to get a rough idea.

Oh and congratulations on the dream house!😁

It costs a LOT to furnish a home, even from IKEA etc. I moved into my 1st 2 bed flat about 10 years ago & I think in the first 2 years would have spent 20k or so (beds, carpets, dining table etc)

Depending on your needs/budget, buying second hand is a huge money saver (obviously) and so is waiting for bank holiday etc sales (I would not personally buty mattresses, sofas etc second hand as risk of moths/other bugs)

What do you think you need, and what is your budget?

I furnished a 2 bed property last year from £1500 from IKEA for 2 beds (double & single + mattresses), 2 wardrobes, 2 chest of drawers, 2 bedside tables, sofa, armchair, side tables, dining table and chairs, rug, bookcase, TV table, curtains x 4 sets, lampshades, shower curtain and rail. Not necessarily the cheapest of each item either, the beds, mattresses and sofa was midrange. If I had more time I would have bought better stuff for the same price of Facebook marketplace.

Initially,
Fridge, washing machine, bed, wardrobe.
Had a table and chairs left for me, and a box of beer got a friend with a van to collect my bosses old (hideous) sofas.
I already had pans, cutlery, bedding.

Carpet was next on the list, then slowly picked up more bits over the next few years.
Depends on how basically you can live for a while!

I’ve spent about £4000 on my house (3bed) but I needed everything as we moved from abroad.

Probably 1,500 pounds. I hit alot of op shops and got stuff from people giving it away! with a little work you can take absolute rubbish furniture and make it pretty.

Very little, but I buy everything off ebay and have upgraded opportunistically. Good quality wooden furniture and chalk paint are lifesavers. I love stenciling furniture too. It always looks amazing, no matter how unartistic you are!

Spend on framed pictures that you love. They make a home and will grow old with you. We have a family tradition of buying each other professionally framed pictures for birthdays and Christmas and it is inexpensive. Also, cheap but good curtain fabric and find someone who makes up the curtains. I have a beautiful anglo-indian blue with elephants which cost £3/m from a remnants shop. We bought the stock and it sets the theme throughout the house.

Last tip is continuity - rooms with the same base palette and colors that flow from room to room will look posh even when it's just paint.

Next to nowt. My first home by myself, fled from domestic violence, and I didn't have much money at all when I moved.

Family (very kindly) bought me some lovely bedroom furniture, I was in such a dilemma as to whether to accept it (I made a thread on here and everyone told me I should, and I did, they really wanted to do it).

Second hand beautiful wooden bed frame in an ornate design, £150 and bless the lovely man who sold me it even labelled each part so it could be put together simply.

Sofa second hand, free, chairs I already had. Other bits and bats all second hand but good quality, I had carefully developed an eye for what I wanted. Over time I bought other bits for the house but it didn't cost me much at all overall. When I hear how much people pay for things I wince, and the wastefulness of buying new when there are so many lovely things out there that need a home and just go to landfill otherwise.

Depends how fussy you are. Can probably do it for free if you just do free cycle and live in a reasonably affluent area. If starting from scratch I'd do that and then just replace as and when I can afford it. The thing that is ridiculous is curtains and blinds so if you can get those second hand or free, do it.

People like that are a dying breed... sigh...

I hope you're wrong, but I've a feeling you aren't.

I did send him a message once it was up, with a photo and briefly explaining my situation and how grateful I was. It was a fb marketplace sale before there was much in the way of preventing fraud on fb, I paid him half a week before and half when the removal man collected it. I said how much it meant to me and thank you to him and his wife-they were selling as it was a spare room bed and seldom used and they wanted an office instead. I was very lucky. Makes me happy each time I sleep in it :)

LavenderfortheBees · 16/07/2022 07:15

First flat hardly anything as most of it was either left at the flat, family castoffs or second hand. Had basics like pans and cutlery from moving to uni halls.

Second house took it all with me and also had to buy a washing machine, desk and bookcases. Probably spent about £500 when I moved in. Also during my time there replaced the knackered sofa with a new one for £800 and got a great deal on some other, ex-display furniture.

Then when I moved to current house, replaced my bed which cost about £500 and bought a tumble dryer as finally had space for one. I still have a lot of my original second hand or castoff furniture as its decent quality.

Lemonlemon88 · 16/07/2022 07:20

We’ve slowly bought more furniture as our houses get bigger, we have a real mix of £££, ikea and secondhand stuff. I quite like the eclectic mix but I get a bit jealous when
i see some houses which are all furnished with high end matching stuff.

gogohmm · 16/07/2022 07:28

First home about £100, things were hand me downs or charity shop bargains. I then replaced items gradually.
