Integrating food waste caddy

Still drafting a full redesign of our ground floor. I am trying to pin down the small stuff and I am keen to keep surfaces as clear as.possible. We use our food waste caddy lots- fruit peel, egg shells, kids’ leftovers etc.. I will only compost green kitchen waste . Are there any elegant solutions? I don’t think I want it in a drawer with fry waste and recyclables as I like being able to clean it after every use. I worry the shared drawer would become manky and attract flies within a day or two if kids miss aim. I’ve seen a hole in the counter top but that looks a bit odd too. Thank you for any ideas.

Ours is in a bin drawer. We rinse it out when we empty it. Doesn't seem a problem that recycling and general waste in same cupboard

We have a whole pull out cupboard with 3 compartments. One for general rubbish, one for recycling and I have put the food caddy with its own lid into the third compartment. It works so well.

Have a look at IKEA kitchens for inspiration.

Why not get an Insinkerator so that you don’t need a food bin at all?

We have a 600mm pull out unit with 2 large (? 70litre) bins, one for waste one for recycling, and 2 small caddys with lids....one for compost, one for other food waste to council collection. Each bins lifts out easily and gets rinsed out when emptied.
Works well for us.

Thanks all. That is really useful to know. I just didn’t want a stinky fly trap as like to have all doors and windows open all the time and so smelly or sticky would not work. Thank you

We have a small bin which hang over the edge of the recycling bin in a pull out drawer unit. There are a few key things

  • No lid! I know most caddies have lids, but IMO they’re responsible for much of the mess. Especially tea bag drips - getting rid of the lid reduced those a lot because the waste can just go straight into the bin without a pause to fiddle with a lid.

  • We have two. When we empty one, it goes straight into the dishwasher for proper deep cleaning.

  • Small size. Too big, and food builds up and smells.

Ah so no lid and small size combined makes sense to me and yy for two so I can constantly wash away the smell. Thank you.
