Boiler at risk

Would you ever use a boiler that's been labelled at risk? Had an annual service and discovered that the whole external part of the flue has been knocked off! Getting a quote for a new one and will have it fitted asap but in the mean time boiler has to be labelled as at risk due to the possibility of gases coming back in. No dangerous levels of carbon monoxide detected at present though. Gas man said it's up to me and he didn't actually turn it off although he ticked the form to say he had. I've since turned it off myself. Heating obviously not required just now anyway but it's annoying having no hot water. We must have been using it for weeks without realising, as I suspect it happened when next door had some building work done a month or 2 back. Wondering if it would be ok to turn it on just to run a bath occasionally then put it straight off, or should we just consider it out of use until properly fixed?

If it’s just due to the possibility of gasses coming back in, and you have windows open, I probably would turn it on if I needed a bit of hot water. Having it on long enough to fill a bath seems a bit too long.

I have, due to two separate winter boiler breakdowns, perfected the art of showering -including hair washing but no conditioner-with just one kettle of boiling water, a large jug and the cold tap!

No I wouldn’t

Hi thanks for everyone's thoughts. It's a combi boiler and I would need to have it on for about 5 but no more than 10 minutes to run a decent bath. I've been using the kettle to wash the dishes and had a very cold shower this morning! Which wasn't so bad given the heatwave!

Thanks, I know you are right! I will just have to manage without it. Carbon monoxide scares me silly and I have children. They will just have to have a cold plunge bath or a wash down with a flannel. At least it's happened at the best time of year and during a heatwave no less. I should be grateful for that! I'm definitely getting it fixed asap. Just waiting for the quote from the gas engineer and I'll book it in.
