Im hoping our extension will begin being built next spring, 🤞🏼 , other than just having a big declutter what advice for things to do around the house before the work starts? (We are knocking down kitchen, small playroom and outhouse and rebuilding kitchen/utility/ground floor bedroom). I'm wanting to make life as easy as possible when it all starts so any advice really appreciated. (And if there's already a post like this my apologies I did search and maybe could you direct me to them)

I Have a big project starting this month.

I have planned out a makeshift kitchen and bough a hot plate to cook on - that plus the microwave should be enough although I might get an air fryer.

I have talked to all the neighbours and apologised in advance!

I have bought bamboo plates and cutlery because the dishwasher will probably not be hooked up in my makeshift kitchen.

inwork from home mainly so I have arranged to be in the office full time.

the cat is a bit of a headache! Might move her in with my brother - can’t decide what is for the best for her.

I bought a second hand storage unit for the hall. A big one. As needed somewhere to put all the stuff from the rooms that would be inaccessible. Furniture and stuff we moved into other rooms. Would have moved into storage but didn't need to.

We had a particularly nice light fitting taken down and replaced by a pendant so it wouldn't get damaged/dusty.

Bought 2 induction hot plates.

but did all this in the 2 weeks before so could live as normally as possible up till just before they started.

Thank you. I hadn't really thought about how I was going to use my living room as. a make shift kitchen!!! Something to plan and consider for sure!

Definitely de clutter. Think about the stuff that you will need day to day and where it will go. We planned how to form a kitchen in our living room but didnt consider we'd have no washing machine for months, luckily we managed to temporarily plumb it into the garage. We had no freezer but got a small plug in cool box for the lounge for stuff you need all the time like butter, cheese, milk etc. Think about where you will put stuff that's currently in rooms that will be out of bounds if you need to keep them. We had our roof done too so loft was out of bounds as was the garage as we gave that to the builders to store stuff other than the washing machine. We had stuff at parents houses, garden shed, in the hallways, under our beds, in the kids rooms! Chaos for a while. Speak to your builder about programme and phasing so you can potentially keep the kitchen for longer if they can section it off and do other stuff first. And expect everything to get dusty, even upstairs away from the work, it gets everywhere and settles for weeks after the builders have gone!

@Sanch1 that's cracking advice thank you I hadn't even thought about the fact that I wouldn't be able to wash any clothes 😧 You've given me lots of things I had not even considered, thanks for taking the time to reply 😌👍

Get a cheap hoover if yours is a nice one. You will be hoovering plaster dust every day.

We've rented a storage unit so that we could put stuff like camping equipment that lives in the garage there to make room for a makeshift kitchen, and all the books, photos, files from the office (which is having the back wall off) and anything else, and are slowly transferring things to there

declutteringmymind · 14/07/2022 16:32

You might want to borrow an oil radiator or something as they will keep switching the heating and water and electricity off.

SatsumaZoom · 14/07/2022 17:47

@CMOTDibbler that sounds so obvious but again I hadn't thought of it! I've looked and there's a storage place less than a mile from my home, that's an excellent idea because I was wondering where everything was meant to go 🤣
