Cheap but decent wardrobes that will do ‘for now?’

We have just moved into our first home and have very little furniture.

We desperately need wardrobes to store our clothes and the original plan was (and still is, really) to have fitted wardrobes installed either side of the chimney breast in two bedrooms.

Unfortunately, the house has needed £10k of unexpected remedial/safety work (that didn’t show up on the survey! Hmm) and we simply can’t afford/justify getting a joiner in at this stage.

But we need somewhere to store our clothes!

I’ve tried charity shops and free cycle etc but there’s nothing going. Facebook marketplace is full of fake adverts.

Where can we find something cheap but not decent (not liable to fall apart in days!)?

Here’s what we did while the room is still waiting to be done , a couple of poles and a few pieces of wood .

if does the job for now and it’s only a spare room.

IKEA Pax

inappropriateraspberry · 10/07/2022 09:11

Argos do those canvas wardrobes. Cheap but keeps your clothes covered and a bit neater than just a rail.
The idea of second hand from Facebook is great, but then you have to be able to transport it - if your car isn't big enough that's more cost on top.

Caspianberg · 10/07/2022 09:15

We bought brabantia clothing rails 6 months ago for the same reason. They do a narrow and wider option, very sturdy, and two shelves underneath.

We will use Ikea pax and make them fitted ourselves, but where we live the pax carcasses have been out of stock for ages and we have been finishing other renovations first.

we will use one rail in cellar for storing ski stuff when not needed and the other as clothes drying rack

www.brabantia.com/uk/linn-clothes-rack-large-black/ - this is the larger version

Try the Nextdoor app. Everyone local and on ours lots of stuff is advertised.

BarbaraofSeville · 10/07/2022 09:21

It depends what you mean by cheap/decent, but unless you mean absolute bargain basement, you'd probably do worse than just getting what you need of Ikea Pax which will cost a few hundred pounds.

We have these and they're 16 years old and still like new.

You might even be able to get a carpenter to fill in or add shelves or hanging rails in the gaps to make them look built in either now, or in time. Google Ikea hacks for ideas.

Aksbdt · 10/07/2022 09:24

I’ve always found clothes rails to be the best (favourite so far is habitat) although ikea also do some good ones. They’re very cheap and haven’t fallen apart unlike cheap wardrobes we’ve had; when you buy wardrobes second hand they never go back up again as well as they were

hugoagogo · 10/07/2022 09:41

There's a place near me that sells furniture cheaply to people setting up home. It's a local charity but there might be one near you too.

Summersdreaming · 10/07/2022 09:45

Agree with pp, go for rails rather than cheap flat pack furniture. I've done both and all the crappy mdf furniture I bought when I was skint has ended up in the tip but my clothes rails are going strong. The double rails from argos around £25 are good. Set an alert on fb marketplace for wooden furniture and keep checking it.

VladsPants · 10/07/2022 09:48

Really depends on what your idea of cheap is. People are suggesting Pax - we’re wanting to get this for dd new bedroom but it works out too expensive. A few hundred quid is a lot to us, but not everyone.

In your position I’d join all the local fb selling groups and one will come up fairly quickly if our pages are anything to go by.

We did wall brackets, a couple of shelves and clothes rail underneath.
If you want to make it look neat you can fix a curtain wire to the shelf and hang a curtain or voile panel.

British Heart Foundation furniture shops are great for good quality second hand furniture.

Undertheoldlindentree · 10/07/2022 10:15

Gumtree - just bought light-coloured good quality solid wood double wardrobe (with 2 bottom drawers for jumpers) for £70. Recommend holding out for one with metal runners.

Caspianberg · 10/07/2022 10:47

And I agree, ikea pax are cheap for size but aren’t ‘cheap’. The sizes we need for two rooms are around £800 each (£1600).

The temporary brabantia rails were £105 each off Amazon, and will replace our old drying racks when not needed ( the old ones are falling apart). Also lightweight to move around if your still decorating

endofthelinefinally · 10/07/2022 12:26

I have just looked on my "next door" site and there are several wardrobes and storage units, drawers all going free. I expect it is the same all over the country.

This^

Or buy some cheep clothes rails and then chuck a sheet/duvet cover over to keep the dust off.

HannahSternDefoe · 10/07/2022 12:50

Clothes rail cover from argos for £8

Rail with shelves £55 which the cover fits perfectly as this is the combo I have. Smile

they have double decker rails for £16.

angeltattoo · 10/07/2022 13:07

We go this from Argos for DS room and it has lots of storage for hanging clothes.

Bought it on 20% off offer and used nectar points so it was quite cheap and they do same day delivery.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Would love to get one off Facebook marketplace but it is full of fake adverts. You click on one and it’s actually a trader selling new wardrobes and saying “DM for real price”

These piss me right off...far to many of them on marketplace now.

Do you have a local FB Acts of kindness page, or Freecycle group you could ask on?
