How long does a kitchen reno take?

We are moving soon (hopefully) and we are going to be knocking down a wall between what is currently a galley kitchen and a large dining room to make a kitchen/diner/family room.
Just wondering a) how long that amount of work takes and b) how long it takes from planning this to getting off the ground?

We did a similar thing. From ripping old kitchen out and knocking the wall out to getting the kitchen planned and all work carried out took 8 weeks . We already had a plasterer/ builder lined up and he had arranged all the trades we needed. He also was project manager . Work started at the end of January 2020 and finished at the very start of lockdown which I think was the third week in March .
we love our bright , shiny new kitchen

Ooh lovely! I can't wait to do it, but we have 2 kids under 5 so I'm just aware that the disruption will be rubbish. We need to just get on it as soon as we move otherwise it will never be the right time.
Can I ask how much it cost?

Our plasterer organised all the other trades, we rewired our kitchen and got new windows/doors in different places so a bit more work than yours and it took about 12 weeks (would have been quicker but we got Covid and it was over Christmas). Cost was about £4k for the building work, £2.5k for electrics and plastering, we did the floor ourselves (and decorating) and then the kitchen cost on top of that. Small kitchen though, about 10sqm, and we are in a cheap part of the NW

We started at the end of April, knocking down a wall separating the galley kitchen from the dining area. Then rewiring and replastering. We probably have another 2-3 weeks to go. Our kitchen only arrived last week as we had to wait for flooring to be installed. Now just waiting for the worktops, tap and cabinet handles. It hasn’t been painted yet but a decorator friend is doing that in August when we are on holiday.

I suspect that the main issue will be that anyone who is good and reasonably priced will already be booked up until at least january. So you have the option of throwing money at it and paying a more expensive kitchen fitting company to get it done quicker or getting someone crap in who will be cheap and available in the next few months.

Our side return extension / Reno took 12 weeks

These are two separate jobs. You need to know if the wall is structural or not. Then get a builder in to knock it down, make good. Then the builder could look at your plumbing and electrical requirements - big you need the kitchen planned to get everything in the right place. Then you could use a kitchen company to do detailed plans that the builder works to. They will need to know where ovens are and the sink etc. The kitchen company installs your kitchen when they get it. 12 weeks is very optimistic. Some builders will do a temp fix so you can use “kitchen” while you wait for refit. No easy solution I think.

I have just had my kitchen done and it has been 4 weeks so far, by the end of the 3rd week we could start using it again.

Ours took a while, but we did it in stages - wall removed first and we lived with the space opened up for a few months whilst we sorted out the kitchen design. Ours in an odd shape and we needed someone with vision to come up with a design to tie the two spaces together and provide a workable design. I then researched appliances and looked for the best deals.

Our kitchen/utility refit with plastering and wiring is expected to take 4 weeks but that’s not including knocking walls down. We’ve purchased a bbq to see us through. Should be done by September as we’re starting in August but it has taken us 6 months to get 3 quotes, tweak designs and be happy.

Because it's a galley kitchen, removing the wall also involves removing half the kitchen including the sink... so it's not as easy as just knock the wall down and do it in stages. You have to remove the kitchen first, then remove the wall, then sort flooring and rebuild new kitchen etc.
Surely there will be a company that can organise all this as one big job? Definitely minded to throw money at it to get it done or we'll just put it off for a decade and live uncomfortably

Following as we'll be doing the same plus a loft extension

Geneticsbunny · 12/07/2022 08:09

A local building firm should be able to project manage the other trades and do the whole lot but they will be very busy doing extensions and loft conversions. I would get some quotes and look to book someone in for next spring/summer, then you will know you have a confirmed date and are likely to get a reputable builder. That also gives you plenty of time to drool over Pinterest, choose cabinets, design where things are going, read the kitchen mistake and tips thread on here and get everything perfect.
