Which layout?

We are looking to covert our garage, and possibly then add an extension.
I've two ideas for the downstairs layout, would love to know what you would go for.
My main wish list is to not have a living room that is a thorough route and to have a bigger hall area

A, block off the lounge door from hall, keep lounge as lounge as it's bigger. Bash through wall from hall into garage conversion and make that the main route through the house. Probs put our dining table in here and make a family room of it.

B, just convert the garage. Leave doors as are. Maybe have the garage conversion as a smug and keep main lounge as a walk through family lounge

If you go with a, block up the door from the lounge into the kitchen diner.

Personally I'd not want the whole garage room opened up like that.

If I block the door from
Lounge to kitchen in plan a it won't have a door at all Grin

Here's a bit more detailed plan of what I'd use the spaces for potentially

Is the kitchen wide enough for an island? Going by the measurements, looks like it might be a bit of a squash and a squeeze.

A looks better

PragmaticWench · 05/07/2022 12:42

Try a pocket door between the sitting room and the kitchen if space is tight.

God, it would be so annoying if you were sat in the lounge and the front doorbell rang. You'd have to go all round the house to answer it

I meant instead.

Bonkers to have to walk all the way round the house to get into it.

endofthelinemaybe · 05/07/2022 20:09

Hmmm good for thought. I hadn't thought of it as bonkers to walk all the way round. When we come home we all head to kitchen first so would be the same walk but thru a different room.
Like the idea of pocket doors! Thanks

Aside from the garage conversion, what else is currently there? Do you use the side door into the utility?

What about this instead? Right hand side fully open to a dining table and relocated kitchen (block side entrance). Then put the utility and loo on the far left.

Patio doors in the center to get as much light into the main living space as possible.

Lounge closed off with one entrance at the front of the house.

Hmmm interesting. Think might be quite expensive to move the bathroom like that, would probs be easier to do the same in reverse

I prefer that OP. It looks like a more usable space. You'd have a lot of doors in the kitchen if you go with option A which will limit the amount of cupboard and work space you can have.

endofthelinemaybe · 06/07/2022 08:18

Or go a bit more extreme and do this

Yes I think your right about all the doors, impacts the kitchen and also makes the lounge less useable

Last one you are wasting an awful lot of space on the toilet/utility.

Yes I think you are right, it'll feel like a narrow hall in what could be a big open space

You will need to check building regulations as you are removing the doors from the stairs and the hallway into a room. This is a fire hazard and you will need it to be done properly if you want to sell in the future

endofthelinemaybe · 06/07/2022 16:00

Good point. I think maybe a pocket door there would be useful

Could you move the wc and utility to the front of the garage, then have a dining area in the back half of the garage and the kitchen along the whole of the back?
