Electric oven crackling?

purpleme12 · 02/07/2022 21:22

I've got electric oven.
Came with the house.
Sometimes it's been making a crackling sound where the switch is and the switch has been flickering
What does this mean??

Electric oven crackling?

It means don't switch it on and get an electrician in asap. Sounds like you have got a loose connection in the plug and the crackling noise is the cable arcing, ie the live connection is making a spark in the space between the loose wires to complete the circuit.

If it goes it will probably just go bang, cause a short circuit and maybe melt the socket, but its possible your consumer unit (fuse box) isn't new and therefore not safe, and that could be a fire risk.

Oh great this doesn't sound good 😭😭😭

I don’t know but it doesn’t sound good! Don’t use it!

purpleme12 · 03/07/2022 21:21

Oh right I have been using it.

Ok.

I don't suppose anyone has any idea what the cost would be of electrician to fix this loose connection?!
This is all a first for me!

@purpleme12 We had an emergency electrician out yesterday for something similar - crackling and a burning smell. £125 + VAT call out fee plus £120 per hour he was here 😭 I told myself it was worth it for peace of mind the house wasn’t going to catch fire. But still ouch. Tbf, it was a nighttime call out so maybe higher prices

johnd2 · 04/07/2022 09:11

Is it cracking when you're using the oven or just randomly?
If it's when you're using it, it's a loose connection. And can be dealt with in sure course although avoid using the oven especially unattended.
If it's at any time it's likely shorting which is more serious and you should either switch the circuit off at the fuse box straight away or get the electrician urgently.
It's a simple enough fix in either case, although there may be other issues found by the electrician good luck!

I had the fuse spur changed last week due to connection issues & it was £108
£80 call out fee
£10 part
£18 vat

It took 20 minutes to diagnose, change the part and seal it up

It was the switch for our dishwasher last year that was crackling and arcing, so a simpler switch than a cooker switch, but our electrician charged £55. This included parts, labour, VAT and replacing a separate twin socket in a different room too. Perhaps call around a few electricians for a quote.

And yes, do not use it until it is fixed!

Oh god

I've switched the red switch to off

So I don't think it requires an emergency electrician?

It's when I'm using the hob

I'm not sure if it's when I'm using the oven

Should I still avoid using it?

I'm not sure what this fuse spur is but bloody hell I'm not used to shelling out all this money!

Yes, do not use it at all, switch off the red switch and keep it switched off. Get an electrician in before you switch it on again.

Ariadneefron · 06/07/2022 19:04

This is potentially very dangerous and could start an electrical fire if you carry on using it.

purpleme12 · 06/07/2022 22:54

Perhaps it's a good job I'm getting a microwave for my birthday!!
Time to start ringing electrician I guess 😞
