Kitchen - drawers or cupboards under worktop

Kitchen fitter has come back with his designs 3 sets of 800 drawers under worktops. We currently have 1 set - top drawer is cutlery, 2nd drawer bigger utensils, spare cutlery that's not often used eg steak knives. 3rd drawer table cloth, tea towels, table mats, bin bags, tin foil. We have a set of 600 drawers under the oven with pots and pans in. We have cupboards for the rest of stuff eg plates, glasses, food etc

My question is there are lots of posts on mumsnet saying drawers are better, but what else do you put in the drawers?? What goes in the drawers that you then don't put in a cupboard?

Plates and food etc can all go in drawers.

I think the only thing I potentially wouldn't want to put in a drawer would be cups/glasses.

I would definitely have drawers in my future kitchen!

Much easier, you can reach everything.

Plated and bowls
Pans
collanders, mixing bowls, jugs etc
baking trays
tins

We've got 6 large drawers plus a smaller one under the ovens. All pretty full and still easy to find and access everything.

We also have 3 large drawers in our pantry cupboard. Again, it’s much easier to find make stuff with the exception of tins where you can’t see what they are from the top so they go on the shelf.

We're only having one set of lower cupboards in our kitchen and the rest drawers as it's easier to access most things imo. The one cupboard is for a couple of appliances like the blender and slow cooker that are too deep for the drawers.

That is exactly what we did.

Drawers are a game changer. No more scrabbling about at the back looking for stuff. I have lined my drawers with non slip liners to prevent my crockery from sliding about.

I keep cups and glasses on shelves in wall cupboards.

Drawers are so handy! We have six deep pan drawers in our kitchen island with two hidden cutlery drawers. We store our pans, big pots, oven dishes, plates, bowls, small kitchen appliances, and baking equipment in them. I have those rubber mat things inside the drawers to stop things slipping around. It means you can see everything when you open the drawer and you don’t have to rummage around in a cupboard. The only downside is that it’s really easy to drop crumbs into open drawers!

Everything drawers here.

cutlery and utensils. Plates and bowls, food, dishes/ colander/ cheese graters.

We just have glasses and cups up high.

Aria20 · 02/07/2022 07:47

Great thanks we'll go with the drawers then. There will be some wall mounted cupboards for cups and glasses so that's fine and I'll look into some of those rubber mat types things to line drawers so plates don't slip about.

Thanks all!

These are the ones I used.

Drawers are the way forward! I have one for pots and pans, one for plastic bowls and Tupperware, one for cake decorating stuff, one for crockery, one for small appliances - the list goes on!

Love Drawers. Wouldn't want go back.

Everything in drawers except glasses and slow cooker.

I've got one larder unit a cupboard under the sink and everything else is draws.
I've no top cupboards and we have plenty of space.

HappyHappyHermit · 02/07/2022 10:41

We used to have drawers but changed to cupboards, I don't find drawers as useful for overall space. I also prefer to have pans all individually placed rather than inside each other, which is what we had to do in our old kitchen. Just personal preference though, I can see by previous posts that I'm clearly unusual!

Mummyofmaniacs · 04/07/2022 00:24

I'm a vote for drawers. I've even had a drawer fridge for about twenty years (my first splurge) and I am going to miss it SO much. There is NOTHING you cant put in a drawer (including other drawers,...to keep it neat)

DifficultBloodyWoman · 04/07/2022 00:46

in my dream kitchen - everything in drawers except food (open shelves).
