Anyone know anything about plastering - how 'finished' should it look?

We are having a lot of the walls in our house plastered at the moment and the finish is not as good as I was expecting. I am not sure if this is as good as it can be or if I have something to complain about ifyswim? Does anyone know what the finish should be like?

To give some more info - there are lots of drips, rough surfaces around sockets/light switches and skirting board, a few dents, and I can see the metal beading shape. Will paint cover all these up as my plasterer is telling me?

TIA

Noooo! It should be glassy smooth, especially if you are just going to paint. Textured wallpaper is the only thing that will cover a bumpy or rough surface.

No - it should be smooth all over with no imperfections. You especially should not be able to see the metal beading.

Paint will not cover these imperfections at all. It needs to have another skim of plaster by the sounds of it.

Get the plasterer back in and say you're not happy (don't put up with any of theier shit either).

(DP is a builder and perfectionist - it has kind of rubbed off )

Thanks for replies.

GOML - is this something he should be able to fix easily do you know - or is he going to have to start again - there is not one wall without imperfections. I guess my worry is that he is not up to it, and we should be getting someone else in to fix it....

Are you sure that he has put the finish coat on it and not just the bonding? There is no way the finish should have drips, dents etc.

I would think that you would just need another thin layer of plaster to cover imperfections, but will have to check with DP and get back (will ask him this evening)

I would be tempted to get another chap in as the current one surely must know that what he has done is crap. But bloody hell you have paid your money and should expect a good result. I suppose it depends on the reaction you get from the plasterer. If he had a labourer with him when he did the work it is possible that he would have done it. In any case the finish should be better than what you have been left with.

Let me check with dp

If you can still see the beading it needs another skim coat.Thre are sometimes little crumbly pieces that can be sanded off.I love good plastering it is a real skill
