Induction hob help please

I've never cooked on induction before but have had electric hobs and hated them. I'm most used to gas.

Our new house is not on mains gas so I'm trying to decide what to do. One thought was as Everhot (probably with induction as well as hot plate so I can turn the hot plate off sometimes). But I've started thinking I might be better off with a range cooker with induction. DH hates being too hot and we do have a woodburner in the kitchen so can make it cosy with that- perhaps the Everhot is a bad idea.

Can anyone talk to me about cooking on induction and how it compares to gas? I love the control you get with gas- you can turn things up and down so easily. How does induction compare? I find I tend to burn things on ordinary electric hobs.

We moved from gas to induction when we loved house and went for a range oven. We find the control is amazing over the heat, almost instant, but it does just take a little getting used to. Ours brings water to the boil much faster than gas, which is handy. Overall we are very happy with it, we did have to buy new compatible saucepans though as our old ones weren't made of the right material.

I was always the biggest cheerleader for gas - until I got an induction hob. Honestly they are so bloody marvellous. If a gas is a sports car then an induction is like a Ferrari: it's so, so much quicker to bring to the boil and completely adjustable. And it is SO easy to keep immaculately clean - no dismantling all the rings etc. They are nothing like an electric hob.

And you can check if your pans will be compatible by holding something magnetic to the bottom (I've got a tiny magnet on my kitchen timer - that's big enough to test). If the magnet is attracted then the pans will work on the induction.

Get induction. I guarantee you won't regret it. I'm just about to move back to gas in our new house, and I'll be having an induction hob fitted as a priority.

It's good to read of someone loving theirs!!

when I can face doing the kitchen (has desperately needed it for a longtime, but keep putting it off) I'm going to need to get one.

whuch brand/model is yours? How many 'zones' work on high at one time?

thefirstfortyeight · 29/06/2022 12:45

If you like the control with gas you'll love induction- the level of control is amazing.

Daisydoesnt · 29/06/2022 15:27

@WinterMusings were currently in a rental that has a Falcon range with induction hob. All the zones work on high. Our last house we had a Neff which was equally good. In fact i lie it was slightly better, as it was all entirely glass with no outer metal band which the range top has. That makes it slightly less easy to get perfectly smear free (yes I’m a clean no freak)

Recently replaced a gas range with a Stoves induction. It is SO much better, for all the reasons pp have said. I only had one pan (, a wok that was supposedly induction safe,) that I had to replace.

Massive shoutout for induction hobs 👍

My hobs is a 4 ring Bosch. Plugged straight into my existing electricity supply. I did some research to make sure I was buying one that didn't need a higher rating of electricity

I have a Samsung induction hob and love it. When I bought the house I intended to get rid and have a gas hob as I was used to gas and thought it was the best. ut my son (a chef) said he thought I should try it for a while as he thought I would like it. I only hadone pan suitable for it so had to buy new. But I totally love it. So controllable, reacts immediately to changes in heat level; so easy to clean. You can use all rings at once, and can put a small pan on abig ring or vice versa as it is the pan which heats up, not the hob top. It also cooks down very fast after turning off.

My last two hobs have been induction. I love them. So controllable, efficient and easy to clean.
