The ultimate Compromise: which house would you choose?

We live in a village which is quite pricey and very few properties come on the market (in our price range!!)

I really want to stay detached and I really want a good size garden. I also want 4 bedrooms, a pretty street near the school and fairly up to date fittings! Having realised I need to compromise I am willing to sacrifice some of those things and go for a 3 bed (if I have to!), not be on the prettiest street in the village and be open to the place needing work.....it is the garden that I don’t really want to compromise on and also being detached.

But I keep thinking maybe I’m being unrealistic, maybe I need to compromise more?! We are running out of time afterall!

So with this in mind would you go for a good size semi with a large garden that needs updating/ layout rejig or a smaller property with a smaller garden but detached and potential to extend into the garage?!

The bungalow has 1415 sq ft space; which is decent. I'd go for the bungalow.

The house really isn't that much bigger at 1506 SQFT.

Pbbananabagel · 23/06/2022 14:37

Number 2 hands down, far more interesting property and you could always look at turning it into a dormer.

Titterofwit · 23/06/2022 14:37

Bungalow!
The house is nice enough but to go from detached to semi would be a brave move,
The bungalow looks so well finished and as pp said you would never have to move if you didnt want to.

UnshakenNeedsStirring · 23/06/2022 14:57

The bungalow is adorable, you also have a garage that you can convert into a room?

FlorianImogen · 23/06/2022 15:02

Defo the bungalow as it has more potential and bungalows are sought after as they don't build them these days. I don't think you'd ever lose money with that option.

fitflopqueen · 23/06/2022 15:07

House 2 much better and potential for the extra bedroom in the loft.

BackToTheTop · 23/06/2022 15:09

The 2nd one without a doubt

Igmum · 23/06/2022 15:15

Number 2 and extend here too - it looks great 👍

ItsSnowJokes · 23/06/2022 15:25

Bungalow. It also has solar panels, not to be sniffed at with the current prices of energy.

Sprig1 · 23/06/2022 15:33

Definitely the second one. You use space much more efficiently in a bungalow.

Annasgirl · 23/06/2022 15:36

OP, I’m adding to the unanimous view - go for house 2.

ImplementingTheDennisSystem · 23/06/2022 15:36

I'm all about not having any shared party walls.
I'd rather live in a 2 bed detached than a 6 bed semi!

Pallisers · 23/06/2022 15:38

Definitely house 2. it is lovely.

HeadNorth · 23/06/2022 16:02

Detached any day of the week. I would never choose to live in a semi over a detached property.

ivykaty44 · 23/06/2022 16:06

House 2 with room to extend and detached

Candleabra · 23/06/2022 16:09

House two without a doubt. No contest.

SpiderinaWingMirror · 23/06/2022 16:09

Detached bungalow out of those 2. Much nicer.

Calmdown14 · 23/06/2022 17:07

I expected to say the semi but having seen the links the bungalow all day long.

Do you have three children and actually need four bedrooms? The garden looks nice as does the kitchen.

What were you thinking of rejigging for the semi? Because the utility and study are the other side of the original corner of house. It's possible to knock through but a lot of steel and mess

The bungalow looks like it would be pretty easy to update. Mostly decoration and the bathroom isn't that bad. You could give it a quick tart up for a few years

DDivaStar · 23/06/2022 17:09

Definitely the second. That's assuming you will have funds to do work and won't be stretching yourselves too much.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 23/06/2022 17:11

Bungalow for sure!

ISeeTheLight · 23/06/2022 17:12

Echoing everyone else - the bungalow.
I wouldn't want to live attached again; you never know who will move in.

Bungalow also has a lot of scope to extend eg into the loft.

PlanetNormal · 23/06/2022 17:17

Of those two, I would go for the bungalow and it isn’t even close. It’s detached, the garden is a good size and there is loads of potential to extend and / or convert the loft.

TwoBlueFish · 23/06/2022 18:01

I’d go for he bungalow, much better layout and more scope to extend if you wanted to.

Greenlife1 · 23/06/2022 18:07

@Calmdown14 yes three kids but the youngest is still in with me so I feel we could muddle through for a bit until we sort the 4th bed (or the little ones share), I think you are right about the rejigging of option1. It could prove to be a massive project. I think it’s been extended twice which no doubt worked for the vendors but for us it feels very patchwork answers would drive me nuts.....if you see what I mean!

2 nd one a million per cent . You can make it a house on that plot .. first one is really not nice !
