New house is on gas/electric smart meter - how easy is it to revert?

Although being assured this new house did not have smart meters… it does!

I would like them to be reverted back to normal meters, or for them to be operated in ‘dumb’ mode.

Does anyone know how easy this will be, or will it be a battle?

Also, any recommendations on tariffs? Are we better off on a variable rate at the moment? Is one company better than another on variable tariffs?

They won't switch them just because you don't want smart meters. Costs too much money and also what a waste of resources. Why don't you want them out of interest?

TodaysSocks · 21/06/2022 12:21

It's a bit of a 'case by case' decison, but a number of the big suppliers will remove it for a fee (around £150).

Why don't you want a smart meter? Do you have a particular enthusiasm for reading meters and typing numbers into websites?

Ilikewinter · 21/06/2022 12:54

Not sure why you want the meter switching, it essentially saves you from giving meter readings so you are accurately billed for the gas/ electric you have used.
As regards to fix or variable, theres an absolute shed load of information on this on the internet, try reading anything issued by Martin lewis.

Why?

Are you my mum OP?

Do you believe that the government are monitoring your tumble dryer usage as well?

marniemae · 21/06/2022 13:00

You can ask your supplier to put them in "dumb" mode. This means they won't be commissioned so they would be unable to read them remotely and they would be working as a normal legacy traditional meter would.

This!
Best thing I ever did- no more having to scramble around in the dark corner of the under-stairs cupboard in order to get an accurate bill!!

I just unplugged mine and now send in meter readings. (it had a very load alarm that went off if I went over a certain limit, it only went off occasionally but I couldn't figure out how to stop it and it was very very load, so it got unplugged)

Fitzfatsfeist · 21/06/2022 13:39

Also I'm careful with usage anyway so it didn't save me anything.
