Do you buy snacks/drink for the removal guys on moving day?

We just exchanged contracts and will complete next Wednesday. Removal booked with a local company. We will pack everything ourselves as the house is small and we do not have lots of stuff. Will need the guys to dismantle our bed and reassemble it at the new place, all other things will go as they are.

So my question is as the subject: on the moving day do you prepare any snacks/drink for the guys? If you do, what do you suggest we get for them? Our tea set and baking trays will be in boxes so no home made stuff please. Thank you :)

We relocated and had a 2 day move. Bought a selection of stuff for lunch for tesco on day 2. Gave £60 cash tip to the head mover ( foreman?). The owner of the business said that all cash tips were saved and divided up at Christmas.

I had biscuits and hot drinks for them but they had a policy of only using their own refreshments (I'm not sure if this was a Covid thing) so we ate them ourselves!

My dh went to local deli and got them sandwiches and drinks (of their choice.) He was going for himself and they were going to be packing all day. The seemed to appreciate it and were quite surprised. That was in USA. We offered similar when we moved in uk and although they accepted and appreciated it they looked at us like we were a bit daftGrinConfused

I always have but being ex military we move every few years. Usually I go research what's local and grab lunch for everyone with the kids whilst the bulky stuff is being unloaded. Last time it was KFC bucket meal!

CombatBarbie · 18/06/2022 20:46

But when it's being packed up, I always take the brew kit in the car with the kettle and make sandwiches for everyone.

Interesting reading - we are moving from
a regular 3 bed semi and will be paying almost £2k to the movers… I’m not sure about all this £100 tiP on top etc….

Can I ask people to bring me snacks on the day I offer them a new job?

No. You don't need to. They're used to people being stressed and without kettles.

We did loads of tea and coffee and biscuits for our removal guys. They did do the bulk of the hard work!

also gave them a tip (£20) at the end of the day for beers/the weekend. The removal company gets the fee but the actual guys doing the job just work really hard for a fairly basic wage. So very happy to give them money directly for their hard work.

Exactly. A 20 for each worker is standard.

LesLavandes · 19/06/2022 14:14

I tip the removers. £25 per person

LenJoseph · 19/06/2022 16:45

Is £10 tip each an offense? 🫣 So as I said our house is small and we do not have lots of stuff, the company confirmed they'd send 2 men and a Luton van, the distance between our current and new place is only 6 miles, cost £475. We were asked to make a 20% deposit which is £95, and I plan to pay the rest in cash, but instead of £380 I will give the guys £400 and ask them to keep the change. Does that sound stingy or is it ok? There'd of course be biscuits, crisps and soft drinks as suggested :)

I think £20 each is the usual tip.

swimmingincustard · 19/06/2022 17:01

Coffee and biscuits plus did a bacon butty run, I was glad to get out of the way for a bit tbh as I felt like a spare part whilst they worked at high speed!

RidingMyBike · 19/06/2022 18:05

We were going to tip ours £20 each (so a total of £100) but they communicated badly, tried to charge us extra at the last minute and didn't follow instructions over how to lift some items of furniture (eg not using the cupboard handle to lift so it got broken) and not packing certain items. So didn't give a tip in the end. It helped to make up for the increased costs when they had us over a barrel (ie all our stuff packed in their vans!).
