Areas in South and West If you had £2m

Spreadsheetssuck · 11/06/2022 16:02

First world problems: we cannot really afford to ‘upgrade’ areas in London to a semi or detached without a massive mortgage.

We have a budget of up to £2m but before I even start going down the Rightmove rabbit hole, I would need some specific areas to search online.

Does anyone have any recommendations for the most beautiful places to live - preferable in the South of England? (I’m foreign and the winters where are challenging enough in London so I’m
afraid the north is a no-go for me).

The area would need to be commutable for one day a week to London or Oxford.

I don’t know every village or town around the Cotswolds or Oxfordshire border but think these could be lovely.

I also don’t know Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire or Berkshire very well.

Have seen parts of Surrey but not spotted the right bits yet.

Dream list house: Detached, driveway, decent garden, utility, wide hallway, period features, lots of light. Hate cottages and low beams but love high ceilings and large windows and cornicing etc. Fantasy is an orangery! (I know, I know). Not a fan of the way new builds are done in the UK. Not sure how rural we would want to go given kids will be teens in a few years.

Area: Close to excellent state or private schools. Viable high street with more than chain eateries. Close to places both urban and rural or coast for days out. Commutable to London or at a push Oxford for one to two days a week.

I love the area around Herefordshire but it’s probably too far away to be viable and possibly too cold in winter.

Not keen on Kent and know it fairly well. (Just need a change of scenery).

And I realise I am naming whole counties but what I need is more detail or names of specific villages or areas.

I’m quite sociable so want to get stuck in to a community so would be fab if it’s more than a dormitory town/suburb.

Off to look at your West Sussex sun spots @TheDogsMother . Great tip re sunniest county. Someone mentioned Arundel
up thread which has also always seemed sweet too.

With that budget I would go Winchester, it is expensive but lovely. One of the best Sixth Form colleges in the country too (like Cambridge).

Thanks @Abuildingwith4wallsandtmrinsid . I was convinced Winchester would be perfect but just didn’t love the town on a recent trip. It felt dark and sleepy for some
reason though everyone raves about it as a place to live. I must be missing something! And I’ve heard about the amazing schools. It’s set in beautiful countryside though so maybe there are some amazing villages nearby.

In an ideal world, I would live somewhere that had dozens of bookshops (like Hay on Wye) but with only a quarter the craziness of the festival. But somewhere with a great cultural vibe or near a place that has it.

I know what you’re all going to say…

Bristol - beautiful in parts - BUT it feels a bit too seedy (wouldn’t leave London for it as am swapping one bit of rough for another).

Marlow. Easy for London and Oxford. Only downside - no Waitrose!

Sunningdale. Posh. Train to London. Close to Windsor and royal parklands .Good schools. Waitrose.

Crikeyalmighty · 11/06/2022 21:51

My personal choices for both lifestyle and convenience (and I have lived in several) and know the others well are Marlow, Godalming, villages outside of Guildford like Chiddingfold, winchester and Bath

Spreadsheetssuck · 11/06/2022 21:56

Thanks @Crikeyalmighty. How or why have you managed to move so much? How would you describe each place culturally? If you could choose just one, which would it be? And why has no one else mentioned Bath? I think it is stunning but it seems to divide opinion. Is there anywhere near Bath village wise that could work? We have stayed a few times there and Bradford on Avon but the latter was a tiny bit depressing (not helped by the association with a friend who died tragically young).

I was about to suggest Bath! This one would do me.

Badger1970 · 11/06/2022 22:06

Cheltenham is a mixed bag, OP. Lots of nice areas but equal amount if not more of really deprived areas. And £2 million won't get you far.

I'd look more towards Cirencester/Burford areas of the Cotswolds. Easy commute to London, and nice local towns.

Panamii · 11/06/2022 22:10

Bath? Or one of the lovely villages outside it?

If schools matter most then really it's has to be oxford for private schools.

Lunificent · 11/06/2022 22:17

This, it’s near Chelmsford.

HollowTalk · 11/06/2022 22:43

This one is bang on budget in Beaconsfield, which is a really lovely small town. It also has an orangery.

Marlborough is lovely
The New Forest is gorgeous but can get very busy in tourist season, though fab being near to the coast
Hampshire?

Bathampton is lovely!

Dreikanter · 11/06/2022 23:22

Arundel to Oxford would be a pig of a journey.

I’d be looking more Thames Valley area - Goring and Streatley, Henley, Marlow, Pangbourne.

"I'd look more towards Cirencester/Burford areas of the Cotswolds. Easy commute to London, and nice local towns."

This is my neck of the woods and I'd second this. Burford and Ciren are both lovely towns. Burford is on the bus route for several great private schools and the local state school is good too. Cokethorpe is the nearest private to Burford, but you could access most of the Oxford private schools from Burford. From Ciren you can access Rendcomb (private) Pates or one of the other grammars or one of the many private schools in Cheltenham. Or look in the villages north of Burford (such as Stowe) that is in The Cotswold School catchment, esp those on the train line such as Kingham.

Spreadsheetssuck · 12/06/2022 00:13

Wow some amazing properties - I would feel like a cast member of Bridgerton … though not nearly glamorous enough to grace their salons.

Sorry for the confusion re geography. I meant Oxford OR London rather than both to give one of us a striking chance of getting well paid work if we ended up not being able to work remotely.

I came on to suggest Cirencester, beautiful town centre with some nice restaurants etc. Or Corsham near Bath might suit? It's a bit sleepier than Bradford but has such a pretty high street and quite an independent vibe. The local arts centre is pretty good for a small town, and it's an easy drive into Bath. Train from nearby Chippenham into Paddington is 1 hour 10.

erinaceus · 12/06/2022 03:26

Godalming or Petersfield.
