Has anyone fitted security grilles in their home?

Roughly how much do they cost?
The weather is getting warmer and I daren't open my windows due to increasing numbers of burglaries in my area. I thought of putting lockable grilles across a couple of windows so I can open them. Or would it be cheaper to replace the windows with the sort you can lock when tilted ajar?
TIA

I don’t know but my instinct would be that the easiest thing would be to add window restrictors to your existing windows.

I don’t know either. But I would ask a security company as it would be in their area if expertise. Also, think about how you could still exit the building in a fire, or how the fire brigade could enter and rescue you. Security grilles might not be a wise option.

I didn't realise you could add restrictors. I will google that too.
I would only put grilles on a couple of windows, not the fire escape ones. There are so many burglaries at the moment it is getting out of hand. My neighbour was burgled at 4pm when she was in the house. They came in the bedroom window which was slightly open.

@Caughtshort was she in the house at the time? Your poor neighbour 😱

Caughtshort · 11/06/2022 15:56

Yes, she was. We all know how long it takes for the police to respond...

I have ordered a window restrictor to try out. If I manage to fit it ok I will order a couple more. Thanks for that suggestion SheworeYellow. How did I not know such a thing existed? I had asked a friend who is builder for suggestions and he didn't mention those!

Agree with window restrictors rather than grilles, it makes your house look like a prison!

We have window restritors on the downstairs windows that we open. There's a few on upstairs windows that are accessible via a low roof.

Maybe he was building up to suck in his breath and shake his head a bit and tell you it'll cost you because the grilles have to be 'Yay Big' and he can only order them in 'Middling' and there's a shortage at B&Q Tradepoint.

Saying, 'oh yeah there's a cheap gadget for that available online' doesn't seem to be in some builders' lexicons. Yes you, DP.

But I'm sure he's lovely too Smile

Grin To be fair he is lovely, but not really a windows person. He fits kitchens mainly.

Maybe an aircon unit would be cheaper than grilles and more effective than opening a couple of windows a sliver.
