Carpet question

I'll start this by saying this is the first time I've ever bought carpet, so I might be revealing my naivety/stupidity here... But I received a quote for a carpet today and I'm confused!

We'd like to get a stair runner installed and two small landings carpeted - stair runner would be 40cm wide up 15 standard stairs with a turn, the first small landing at the turn is just under 1.5msq and the top landing is 4.4msq.

The retailer has quoted us for 18sqm of carpet, saying that it's 4m wide, so they will need 9sqm for the top landing alone. I'm struggling to see how this makes sense - yes, the top landing is narrower than the width of the roll, but surely the excess from this could be used for the smaller landing, for instance? Top landing is 1.8m wide at its largest point and the other one is 1.47m wide which comes to under 4m even with 10% excess added on...

The total area to be carpeted is only 6msq, and yes, I understand there will be excess but buying triple the amount of carpet actually needed seems mad to me... Or am I being very naive?! The quote comes to over £2k which seems a crazy amount!

Can't help with huge area sizes etc but I had brand new carpet laid today in my living room, top and bottom landing (smallish) and stairs with big wide steps at the bottom and all in with decent underlay cost me £695) (London). I'd definitely get a few more quotes! X

Living room size is 4m by 5m

Thanks @BearPomBear , that's really useful to know!

How wide are your stairs as well as the landing? And how long are your stairs

madspringer · 09/06/2022 18:35

Hi @Starbeach - the width of the carpeted area on the stairs is 40cm, and each stair is 17cm high by 26cm deep. There's 15 stairs, so I think measurements for the stairs is 6.45m long x 40 wide...

So imagine it as a square or how it comes off the roll I'd order 7m x 4m as a good carpet fitter would cut up the middle and then use both sides as it were.

Have you got a second quote from anywhere? Does that first quote include fitting and underlay etc? I've just had 2 bedrooms and my L shape hallway done fitting with underlay was £370, carpet was £200 for both rooms and the hall flooring was £200.

I don't know where you are based but shop around. If you have a Trago near you their carpets are the same as carpet right/scs at a 3rd of the price.

I'd make sure you get a heavy duty carpet with a really good underlay for the stairs and landing. cloud 9 is a fab underlay.

Thanks for replying @Starbeach , that sounds more like the quantity and approach I was expecting. I haven't got any more quotes but wanted to get another opinion on how it would be fitted/the amount used, as with 18msq we can't justify it for that space no matter where it's coming from!

That quote does cover fitting and underlay, so I'll get a couple more quotes!

Sorry - just realised you think it might be more than 18sq m at 7m x 4m... Tired brain! Thanks for your help 😊
