Can neighbours put up a brick wall to the side of your house without asking?

Just wondering. There was an attachment to the side of our house previously with screws and wood but they’ve rebuilt this wall in a different position without asking and with bricks. I don’t really mind, but it feels like they should’ve checked first as it’s attached to our house. I know it shouldn’t bother me, and it’s no biggie, but I think my autistic tendencies kind of feel like they should’ve checked first.

What was attached to your house? Nothing should be attached to your house -unless it’s a joint wall? They need to ask you, otherwise, and you should refuse.

Usetobeanurse · 09/06/2022 14:34

This is not acceptable. If your house is detached it could make it a different category. You should report it to the council buildings officer.

carefullycourageous · 09/06/2022 14:35

No, they can not.

Speak to your solicitor.

JustTheOneSwan · 09/06/2022 14:36

Have they built along side your wall or are they using your wall as part of their structure?

TheQueensMarmaladeSandwich · 09/06/2022 14:37

Do you get on with them? Mybe have a chat to see what building regulations they had or asked about frm the council

Lizzieismagic · 09/06/2022 14:39

Can you post a picture?

Notagain76 · 09/06/2022 14:40

Id find out what permission they have as I believe if it fell you can be blamed as joint to your property

LIZS · 09/06/2022 14:45

Diagram?

Bettethebuilder · 09/06/2022 14:49

Yes, they should have checked. Yes, it’s a biggie. Yes, it should bother you. You’re not bothered enough.

Definitely need a diagram

Surely attaching something to your actual house means it's built on your land?
Or is your side wall built on the actual boundary?

Does this help?!

The bit between our house and theirs is their land but obv our house is ours!

is it just freestanding in their land if so yes the can do it...I mean its silly cos not stable but they can do it...if they have drilled out your wall to tie the new wall into then no they cannot.

parietal · 09/06/2022 15:13

now I've seen the picture, I think that is fine.

my only concern would be if there is a gap between their new wall and your house which will get damp and/or full of dirt.

Reastie · 09/06/2022 15:16

Thanks, that’s good. So, their new wall is stuck to our house with mortar from the brickwork - there’s no gap between the wall and our house

But your house appears to be built right up to their boundary, so they can do likewise on their own property.

I don't think they can mortar it on, it will bridge your damp course.

Reastie · 09/06/2022 15:24

That’s where I wasn’t sure because it’s touching our house. Glad it’s all ok though

It’s not Ok! They can’t have that gate or that wall if they are attached to your house. They would have to be supported in another way. Eg, a gatepost in concrete on their land with the gate attached to that. The wall cannot touch your house.

Bettethebuilder · 09/06/2022 15:45

Definitely no mortar. It’ll damage your house, for one. There has to be a gap.

Herejustforthisone · 09/06/2022 15:48

OP, you’re too passive. They can’t attach it to your house…

Reastie · 09/06/2022 16:14

How does mortar damage our property? I’m not sure we have a damp course…..

OP posts:
JustTheOneSwan · 09/06/2022 16:18

At best they should have the wall on their house and ask if they could put the catch on your side.
You will have a damp course, did they drill at all for ties?

BookwormButNoTime · 09/06/2022 16:37

Do they have a party wall agreement?
