Wet vacuum for unblocking sink?

Our bathroom sink keeps blocking. It's getting expensive to keep getting plumber out to unblock. Last time he said I should get a wet vacuum as cheaper than keep getting him out. Apparently the sink has small pipes and water pressure not great to flush through soap, and shaving whiskers etc. It also doesn't have a standard unscrewable waste so can't go in that way. Does anyone have a recommendation. He thinks I should be able to pick one up for around £40-£50 which is cheaper than he is. Any views from @pigletjohnn would be welcome too.
Thanks

I had exactly this issue this morning. Soap residue does build up & the odd hair doesn't help either. I tip a load of soda crystals down the plughole & leave it to sit for an hour or so. Then I use a long skinny bottle-brush stick (available in multi-sizes from Lakeland) HERE Run the hot water whilst poking with the brush and it all clears.

Those brushes are skinny enough to fit through the gaps in the plughole

If it’s that bad maybe also get a hair catcher so whiskers don’t go down the plug hole?
or one of these 😂
beard catcher
sorry, it sounds really infuriating. If you’ve spent that much on a plumber it would probably have be cheaper to change the sink that you could fit a screw in waste to!
its @PigletJohn btw(capital letters)

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll go to Dyas and get soda crystals, brushes etc. Thanks for the correct spelling for Piglet😁

Love the beard catcher. I can just imagine my DH and DS's using one of those. 🤣

Screwfix do a titan one which is alright, if you Google it, should be about 50 pounds. We have the dry only one and it's good enough. Better than our old VAX one anyway

PigletJohn · 09/06/2022 00:57

This one www.screwfix.com/p/titan-ttb776vac-1400w-30ltr-wet-dry-vacuum-220-240v/665kh is a bit more expensive and bigger but has a power take off which is very handy for building work. If you plug a saw or drill into it the vac will start when you use the tool. Handy for sawdust and plaster dust.

For wet work you will need the cartridge filter. Get a spare one so you can swap for clean when it gets clogged. You can hose it off or wash it in the sink (use a sieve to avoid blocking the sink again). Dry the filter thoroughly before storing or re-using.

For dry work you can use a disposable paper or preferably white fabric bag which will catch a lot of dust and protect the cartridge.

They are noisy.

@Aop woo hoo thanks for your suggestion. I used the brush which cleared it and then put down soda crystals added a bit of vinegar, left for 10 mins then poured hot water and it's running like a dream now. No need for the expense of a vacuum. Thanks so much!!

washing soda cystals are really good for cleaning away soap sludge, grease and fat. you can do it once a week with just enough hot water to moisten, then leave overnight

no need to add vinegar, which may look nice but actually neutralises the soda.

soda can stain or damage aluminium and some other metals.

deuxgarcons · 09/06/2022 19:09

Yes I think I'll start doing that as it's an ongoing problem. 😁
