How to clean mold out of a ceiling

I wish to paint a room to have it ready and presentable for guests and visitors. The room is in my mother's home. There was a mold issue in the room. Some corners of the room had mold and so did the ceiling.

I know many people will say the source has to be found and fixed. I think the source of the issue was poor ventilation. My brother occupied the room and for a long time he was unemployed and lived in the room without hardly ever opening a window. The mold grew in the room. He never did anything to fix this issue ever. He never washed the walls or the ceilings and he never maintained the room.

He's gone now from the home and the room was a terrible way. Thankfully I was able to wash the walls and the walls seems to be somewhat clear of mold now.

The ceiling is harder to clean. Especially when I have a full time job to maintain too. I was hoping to start painting next Thursday or Friday evening after work by cutting in and then following it with a roller on the wall the following day. That will be the first coat of paint. Then I was going to apply the second coat of paint over the following week.

This doesn't make any sense with the ceiling still in a poor way. It's hard to describe the condition of the ceiling right now. It doesn't look like there's any visible mold on the ceiling but the ceiling does look dirty. So more than likely it looks like the mold got mixed in with a cleaning fluid and got mopped about the ceiling.
My mother tried cleaning the ceiling before I started this weekend and she used ordinary washing up liquid. I tried this weekend using sugar soap.

It doesn't make sense to paint the walls with dirt on the ceiling. I know I would probably have to paint the ceiling but I really don't want to do that job. I was hoping on just cleaning the ceiling and painting the walls.

These corners in the room used to be bad be I washed the walls with bleach and it helped a lot.

Wash down with a mild bleach solution when dry paint with a mold resistant matt paint, ronseal, zinsser and dulux all do one.
Then get a dehumidifier one of the one's that uses the tablets or crystals will do the job.

Spray a cloth with mould cleaner, wrap it round a mop head. Clean ceiling holding mop handle.

I wonder would this method work with a paint roller instead of a mop?

I was using sugar soap on a paint roller sleeve and it never worked for me but I am thinking of trying the mold cleaner on a paint roller. Or I might buy a flat mop.

Looks like the paint has come off. I'd treat it with a mould killer (not just a remover) first. Then go over the bare patches with a mist coat again. Then try an anti-mould paint over the top.No idea how effective they really are but that's what I'd try.

Once I’d used bleach to remove as much staining as possible, I used this product which mixes in with the emulsion paint. I painted the ceiling in the normal way using a roller. Six months later, there has been no sign of any regrowth. I was very dubious but it only cost £11.00 so I’m happy I gave it a go.

I will continue with the washing and bleaching for the week ahead.

Remove the mild, then treat with an anti-mould spray. I would use Ronseal anti-mold paint.

Remove the mould not mild!

HG mould spray, absolute game changer.

Have used for years in various properties. Bathroom ceiling where ventilation was poor.
Kitchen outside wall that was a cold spot and sucked moisture towards it.

Bathroom tiles, on sealant etc,

Even learned it got red hair dye out of a cream carpet!

Spray on ceiling, leave it. It'll be gone in an hour.

This is the stuff that I used last week on the walls and it is good stuff. I found that it dripped down the walls so when I sprayed the stuff on the walls I started lining the walls with kitchen paper so that it would stay on long enough.

I don't want to spray that onto the ceiling because it's just going to drip down.

The room was last painted when the house was built back in the 80s. So that's the reason for all of the paint chopped away from the walls. It's from years of wear and tear, beds without a headboard scrapping of walls, years of posters, etc.

While I was cleaning the walls today I found a few cigarette burns too on the walls.

Those chipped paint is all over the room.

We have a problem with mould on our bathroom ceiling (due to poor ventilation). Similar to a previous poster's suggestion, I spray Waitrose's mould remover directly onto a flat headed mop and use that to spread it around the ceiling. I don't bother to wash it off the ceiling, just leave it to dry. Keeps the mould away for a while at least, although it does come back eventually (I haven't yet got round to painting with the anti mould paint I bought a couple of years ago...)

I was asking if it was possible to get symptoms two days after the possibility of an exposure.

It seems very quick.

The ceiling is damp?

What is above it?

If a bathroom, consider leaks.

If a loft, consider poor insulation

If a roof, consider leaks.

It's an attic.

The house is poorly insulated as it was built in the 80s. My mother refuses to sort out the family home and a divorce so the joke is still in my father's name and because of the insecurity of the situation it's impossible to make any large improvements on home.

I would love to be able to help and put money into making the place nice but I can't because of the situation.

I spent the afternoon cleaning dirt and mild out of the ceiling. It's still not great after my efforts.

Do you think I would be able to get away with not painting the ceiling?

The mark looks to me like there was a leak above

And the water washed dirt through the joint between two pieces of plasterboard

It will show unless you use a stain blocker and repaint

And it will come back if the leak has not been repaired.
