Windows open or not in humid weather? Damp house

The house isn't terribly damp but has been in the past so I air it every day throughout the winter. Today though, it's very humid, I've finished the airing but it feels like I've let in damp air. On the other hand it would feel unnatural not to air it and possibly bad for the house. What's the right thing to do? Does humid air from the outside affect damp inside the house at all?

Personally I think open windows as often as poss is a good idea. I wouldn’t stress too much about the dampness of the air outside, you’ll go mad!

ChoiceMummy · 06/06/2022 20:46

Have you got a humidity display in each of the rooms?
. For us, these generally reduce by about upto 15%during the drier days, but when it's been drizzly like this it tends to go back to where they sit in winter, regardless, but having air circulation is still me at to be the best thing so I'd open.

Definitely let the air in, air flow is good for a house

minipie · 06/06/2022 20:49

As long as you air it again tomorrow I doubt the bit of damp air from today will do any harm.

I have windows open 24/7 all year round, unless it is really, really cold. Can’t have too much fresh air in my opinion.

tulips27 · 07/06/2022 00:09

Thanks everyone, open windows it is!

I disagree, it makes it worse. Wait to open the windows until it is drier outside (ok for a bit to ventilate the rooms but not sort a condensation problem)

Get a dehumidifier,I can’t get over how much water it collets!

You say your house is damp. Where do you think the water is coming from?

It's eye opening isn't it. Old house but gutted a few years ago. A staggering amount of water comes out day after day with the dehumidifier.

PigletJohn · 07/06/2022 11:02

...it's coming from somewhere.

We use a dehumidifier in the room where we keep our clothes airer. Without the unit, the room is prone to a little bit of mould in the north-most coldest corner.

Can't have the windows open when the unit is running, of course, as you'd end up attempting to dehumidify the planet and no-one would thank you for that ;-)

We keep that door shut and open windows in other rooms for air flow which creates a fresher air environment and is nicer for us.

My mum is quite anti- having windows open and I'm very aware how musty the air feels when I'm at hers.
