I can’t relax! How do you shut off from next door neighbours with floorboards!

I’m not sure if I have issues shutting off, but seriously it feels like my next door neighbours have explosions going off next door their floor boards are that loud! They have children and no carpet on the floor. It seems like they constantly run up and down their stairs and jump onto the landing! Anyone else have this problem and how do you cope with the sound!?

You complain to the landlord and require them to put down carpet/sound proofing. It’s not a case of putting up with it.

Pretty sure unless it's a flat and it's on the lease you can't demand they put down carpet!

Same problem here but both home owners. Everytime they slam doors. Bang. Then again. Bang. Everytime they laugh/talk loudly. Everytime they open a drawer etc etc. They're never getting carpets by choice.
I wouldn't mind but last week it was still going at 2am and none of us got a wink of sleep. Don't want to fall out with neighbours so won't complain.
Looked into sound proofing the wall between the houses but too expensive.
Not a good time to move and we could potentially have worse neighbours!
No suggestions but I sympathise with you!

@SafelySoftly Well, it actually is.. unless it’s nuisance levels of noise which it really doesn’t sound like. They aren’t any rules about floorboards in houses and noise just does carry through terraces.

However OP you could certainly ask the landlord to put down carpet, you might have to offer to chip in though, or alternatively, look at sound proofing your end.

So if I understand correctly, unless it's a leased flat, there is nothing that I can do to get above to put down carpet/underlay/proper flooring?

Upstairs neighbours whom I've asked about the noise multiple times - and they said 'it's just the building' - I can even hear pet footsteps, for context!! They've always insisted their floor is fine. However after getting work done recently, and holes in the ceiling it was clear to see they have bare laminate on the joists, no underlay whatsoever! Surely that is not allowed or there's something I [the council?] can do?!
