Choosing a colour for a composite front door

Hi All, interested to hear thoughts on a couple of front door related questions. I'll try not to ramble though I'm still working it out in my own head!

As far as I know you can't paint a composite front door, so the colour is permanent.

To keep costs down we will have a white upvc frame around the door and surrounding windows, there are already half flag windows and top lights surrounding the door which makes the overall quote come out around £3k (ouch) . So basically a lot of white frame. Standard 1930s semi-d with semi circle brickwork around the inset porch.

Looking at quotes for Endurance Doors and Solidor

What would you think of a front door in Turquoise Pastel or Peacock Blue? If we come to sell in 5 years (not British so there's always a chance we will move home) will it be off-putting for new buyers? I think bright front doors are so cheerful and sweet, so if it were purely for myself I would go for a colour that made me happy every time I came home.

Would the brighter colours look tacky against the white surround? As in, do they need a matching colour surround to really work visually?

2nd choice would probably be a Chartwell Green / Sage colour but I worry that this colour is so trendy at the moment it will date. I've actually used variations on this colour inside in a lot of rooms, but paint is easily redone (relatively, and inevitably by a new buyer). Or maybe it's so widely used now it will become one of the standard/ classic colours?

3rd choice French Navy which is me trying to be serious and classic, and which might have the widest appeal?

Also, on a completely different aspect if you have a door like this with a heritage pull lock and no handle, do you find it's easy to pull closed? You know how they can be a pain in the ass in old houses, and you always have to double check they're locked? I'm hoping a newly fitted composite will close quite smoothly? My husband has reservations (as he's the one careless enough to have left previous front doors flapping open) but I really like the more traditional look.

So thoughts on colour and the smoothness of the locking without a handle please 😀

For doors I think the frame and the door look better when they match. I like the Chartwell Green. Don't go red, it fades. Navy is dull. Black is classic but boring. Don't get a heavy wood print on the door it looks too fake. I like the yellow above and the turquoise but ultimately I think it depends on your brick and what tones well with it.

At least it's not grey! Smile

The colour is so pretty in your picture OP. If it makes you happy then go for it. It certainly isn't a bad colour likely to put off future buyers (unlike some nappy poop colours).

I agree with the no handle thing. I actually bought a wooden door just so I wouldn't have the handle (but could have a door chain too). We just pull the door shut via the yale keyhole surround (we also have a mortice keyhole). I like the fact that when we shut the door it is locked. The mortise is only used overnight.

My Solidor door is Peacock Blue and I absolutely love it.

Wouldn't get a handle either

Others on our road have gone for colour of first photo and it looks good. We have a darker blue that does look a bit gloomy.

Don't go for red (speaking from experience) if in full daily sun - it fades.

Blimey, I'm glad I read this thread. We have just settled on red, but not ordered yet. Its south facing and gets full sun all day! Back to the brochures.

Speak to your supplier and discuss colour fastness dependant on whether your door gets full sun during the day. They should be able to tell you which colours they have supplied to previous customers that they have since had to go back to to change.

Black is well known for fading in direct sunlight, as is red.
Chartwell green is really nice but very common now. I think I would go for duck egg blue instead.

I have a red composite door.
it is guaranteed UV stable.
It is 6 years old and looks brand new., as is the garage door, same colour and age.

Mines a navy one like this but I am a nerd and wanted it to look like a Tardis.

I have the pull handle on my composite door and I’ve never had a problem with it. It’s very easy to close and you’d know if it hadn’t.

Do love the brighter colours, yellow, green etc. I was going to go for a light green door, but did not like them in real life (started to look at front doors when I was out and about in my local area). We went for a grey door, boring for some people, but looks smart & not as gloomy as black.
