Replacing storage heaters and immersion tank

I've just bought my first property and it has storage heaters and an immersion tank for the hot water. I am on an economy 7 meter.

There is gas available in the street but not currently installed in the property, does anyone have any recommendations for alternatives for heating? It's a mid terrace 2 bed house, last owners have had it since 1967 and I believe the storage heaters have been in there a long time.

Hopeful bump!

Electric boiler with radiators for heating and a new (hopefully more efficient) immersion for hot water? Or local water heaters to heat on demand? A new gas installation to a property is very expensive, even if it's nearby.

No help really as I have the same system as yours and am happy to stick with it as it suits us as a family and we don’t want the expense or upheaval of installing a gas central heating system.
I hear my friends talking about the problems they have with their boilers and there isn’t a week that goes by when I don’t see a gas heating engineer in our road and I’m grateful that I don’t have such problems to contend with
Our heaters are several years old now but are still pretty efficient in regulating the temperature and our immersion is timed to come on during the hours of cheap electricity. The tank is so well insulated that the water remains hot all day and I can’t remember the last time I had to use the boost to top it up. A bonus for me is that the tank is in a cupboard in the bathroom that I use to air our clothes after washing.
Unless you’ve got a lot of money to spare I’d stick with what you’ve got for now, then if you decide you want to extend or change your rooms around sometime in the future have a different form of heating installed then.

Thank you for your replies! I know gas installation is expensive and I'm not massively bothered about having it installed. I know that storage heaters are old and they will need to be replaced by something, I will have to do some more research as to the best option for electric heating.

I will have a look into the electric boilers as well.

Obviously it depends on your budget and roof, but solar PV might be a good addition to this set up.

There's a device called a Solic which diverts any unused solar electricity to pre-heat your immersion tank. (Your tank's own heating element will then finish the job and take the water up to your required temperature.)

We have a fully electric wet system. Radiator's are just like a regular gas central heating system. The main system has 2 water tanks. Main one heats on economy 10 (in our case) times and small one can be heated quickly on demand. All electric is expensive but we have a fully controllable system. Have a look and see if there are any grants you qualify for replacing old storage heaters - I read something recently about them but can't remember exactly who qualified.
