Anyone regret having side-hanging garage doors?

I need to replace my old ones, which go back decades, and have been told that anything involving mechanics like 'up and over' is a potential risk as it can break more easily. I prefer the look of side-hanging doors. but one aspect of it seems odd - you presumably need a longer drive if you're to open the doors, drive the car out, then leave enough room to close them behind you.

Has anyone found this an issue?

Our previous garage doors slid round on a sort of tram line, it didn't open outwards.

We don't use our garage for parking the car, but we have side hung doors. They are custom built bi-folds so the every day door is in the middle. Our neighbors have since copied us! They're great.

@Daftasabroom. Been looking for that type of garage door without success. Could you please pm where you bought it from if you still have the details. Thanks

@SallyLockheart I designed and made them myself during lockdown. Carpentry is one of my hobbies.

😀. Do you do commissions!

Our up and over doors have been fine for the last 10 years and are properly much older.

We did have to have a resent - but this is just pressing a few buttons until it worked again.

Mot sure why you think there a problem. I click the button indoors and they open - we did have one for the car but the kids left it out in the rain! So down to one in the house.

@Daftasabroom , would you mind sharing a picture?

We still need to fit the glass. It's Siberian larch. You would be off using sweet chestnut, we used leftovers from cladding the house.

We have side hinge wooden painted garage doors. Double garage. Suits the house. Up and over would look naff. Our garage is like a barn style building with a flat over it. It’s what style suits the garage and house. What adds value? In our case, we chose the best solution for the house and it’s kerbside appeal.

We had a particular need with ours. We could not have the metal frame inside the garage that the up & over door used as we needed full height. Also i am a nightmare for coming & going to the garage so did not want to be stood waiting for one of those electric roller doors.

In the end a lovely local guy fitted full width side hung upvc doors in same colour to our front door. I had them solid but could quite easily have them glazed. We have a gym in there and it works brilliantly for us

We have side-hung painted wood doors on our garage. It's mostly used for storing bikes and camping gear, so we mostly don't need to open the entire front and didn't want an up-and-over door preventing use of the ceiling for hanging things.

The doors work really well. I'd recommend getting some garage door stays (not necessarily from this site - only linked to give you an idea what I mean) so you can leave the doors open without them slamming in the wind.

I've been told the 'up and over' is cheaper than the side-hanging. You opt for one that can be upgraded to be motorised if you want, or not.
However, I've been told we need to install a lintel before proceeding.
